Europe begins major push to standardize materials terminology across industry

December 2, 2025 by David Edwards

Europe is trying to fix a major problem in digital manufacturing: everyone uses different terminology to describe materials and processes, and as a result, industrial data is fragmented, incompatible and difficult for software, AI systems and simulations to interpret. That inconsistency has become a major barrier to scaling advanced digital technologies across European manufacturing.

To address the issue, the EU-funded DiMAT project is contributing its expertise to a new initiative aimed at standardising how materials terminology is defined and used.

The initiative is being carried out in partnership with DIN, Germany’s national standards body, and Fraunhofer IWM, which is contributing its expertise in materials data structures and ontology development.

The effort is being developed through the newly launched CEN Workshop “Terminology Definition for Domain Ontologies in Materials Science” (CEN/WS OntoWF), which has now published a draft agreement and opened it for public comment. From Westworld fantasy to real-world hardware: Samsung debuts trifold phone

December 2, 2025 by David Edwards

Five years after trifold smartphones appeared as futuristic props in the television series Westworld, the concept has moved from science fiction into the real world.

Samsung has officially unveiled Galaxy Z TriFold, the company’s first commercially available trifold phone – and one of the most ambitious mobile hardware launches the industry has seen in a decade.

Samsung describes the device as the culmination of years of work on foldable displays, hinge engineering and mobile AI systems. “Samsung’s relentless pursuit of new possibilities continues to shape the future of mobile experiences,” said TM Roh, CEO, president and head of device eXperience division at Samsung Electronics. Saving Hours Each Week With Automated Liquid Handling

December 2, 2025 by David Edwards

Walk into most research labs during midweek and you’ll find at least one person hunched over a bench, pipetting. They’ve been there since morning. By afternoon, their hand’s cramping, and they’ve still got another hour of the same repetitive motion ahead of them.

This scene plays out daily in laboratories worldwide, and it’s costing more than just physical discomfort. Those hours spent transferring liquids manually? That’s time researchers could be analysing data, designing better experiments, or tackling that grant proposal that keeps getting pushed to next week.

Manual pipetting doesn’t just slow things down. It actively prevents scientists from doing the thinking work they’re actually trained for, the work that moves research forward. [Read more…] about Saving Hours Each Week With Automated Liquid Handling

Top robotics and automation companies ranked by financial performance in 2025

December 2, 2025 by David Edwards

Robotics is entering a new expansion cycle. Industrial automation demand remains strong, warehouse robotics is scaling quickly, and AI-driven systems – from humanoids to surgical robots – are generating unprecedented investment interest.

Yet for retail investors and institutional buyers alike, the real question is simple: which robotics companies are actually performing well financially?

The challenge is that most of the biggest names in robotics are not publicly traded. Companies such as Figure AI, Agility Robotics and Unitree dominate headlines and attract billions in venture funding, but remain inaccessible to everyday investors. Others, such as Boston Dynamics, are owned by large conglomerates.

Meanwhile, traditional industrial giants – ABB, Siemens, Keyence, Rockwell – continue to deliver strong earnings by supplying the hardware, software and power systems that underpin global automation. [Read more…] about Top robotics and automation companies ranked by financial performance in 2025
