How Smart Grid Technologies are Optimizing Power Delivery

April 29, 2024 by David Edwards

The traditional power grid system has transported electricity from centralized generation facilities to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers for decades. However, this one-way delivery model faces significant challenges in meeting modern energy demands.

Frequent blackouts, voltage irregularities, and substantial power losses during transmission have highlighted the need for a more efficient and resilient electricity infrastructure.

Enter innovative grid technologies, which promise to revolutionize how we generate, distribute, and consume energy. [Read more…] about How Smart Grid Technologies are Optimizing Power Delivery

Korean scientists develop new navigation system for autonomous ships

April 26, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Existing ship control systems using Model Predictive Control for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) do not consider the various forces acting on ships in real sea conditions.

Addressing this gap, in a new study, researchers developed a novel time-optimal control method, that accounts for the real wave loads acting on a ship, enabling effective planning and control of MASS at sea.

The study of ship manoeuvring at sea has long been the central focus of the shipping industry. With the rapid advancements in remote control, communication technologies and artificial intelligence, the concept of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) has emerged as a promising solution for autonomous marine navigation. Autopilots in cars. What does the future hold for us?

April 25, 2024 by Mark Allinson

In modern life, a car is one of the most necessary things in our life, because it gives a sense of freedom and choice, which is so necessary for a sense of personal security and importance.

Therefore, car manufacturers are constantly trying to surprise their customers by adding new functions and technologies to their cars. Thus, the autopilot system begins to flood the car market, making the life of drivers much easier.

Among the main players in the self-driving car market are such popular manufacturers as Tesla, Waymo, General Motors, Ford, and BMW. Each of them is actively working on the modernization and improvement of autopilot systems in order to meet the needs of consumers as efficiently as possible.

Comau and Leonardo Helicopters design ‘advanced automated inspection’ system for aeronautical structures

February 26, 2024 by David Edwards

The increasing push for faster processes, better control and higher quality in the aerospace industry necessitates a new generation of advanced automation designed to automate complex processes that until a short time ago could only be done manually.

When it comes to testing critical structures such as helicopter blades, for example, the potential benefits of automation increase exponentially, as robotic inspection grants accuracy as well as efficiency.

They also ensure standardization of and full compliance with the testing process by objectively completing each assigned task. [Read more…] about Comau and Leonardo Helicopters design ‘advanced automated inspection’ system for aeronautical structures

Bio-inspired neuroprosthetics: Sending signals the brain can understand

February 23, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Prostheses that connect to the nervous system have been available for several years. Now, researchers at ETH Zurich have found evidence that neuroprosthetics work better when they use signals that are inspired by nature.

A few years ago, a team of researchers working under Professor Stanisa Raspopovic at the ETH Zurich Neuroengineering Lab gained worldwide attention when they announced that their prosthetic legs had enabled amputees to feel sensations from this artificial body part for the first time.

Unlike commercial leg prostheses, which simply provide amputees with stability and support, the ETH researchers’ prosthetic device was connected to the sciatic nerve in the test subjects’ thigh via implanted electrodes.
