Micropolis partners with MCS Robotics to develop container cleaning robot for Swedish port

October 31, 2025 by Sam Francis

Micropolis, a pioneer in unmanned ground vehicles, has entered into an agreement with Helsingborgs Hamn, operator of the Port of Helsingborg in Sweden, and MCS Robotics, a Swedish robotics firm, to jointly develop and test the “Box Cleaner”, an autonomous robotic cleaning system designed for cleaning freight containers in port and industrial environments.

The Box Cleaner is built on Micropolis’ proprietary M2 platform, integrating the company’s AI navigation software, edge-computing architecture, and autonomous control systems.

Designed for large outdoor and semi-industrial environments, the robot performs precision cleaning operations over extended periods without human intervention.

The platform’s capabilities include adaptive route planning, object recognition, and dynamic resource optimization, allowing the robot to minimize water and power consumption while maintaining consistent operational output. The company expects the trial to yield detailed operational data for refining performance metrics ahead of broader commercialization. ETH researchers develop novel artificial muscles that ‘move with sound’

October 31, 2025 by Sam Francis

Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed artificial muscles that contain microbubbles and can be controlled with ultrasound. In the future, these muscles could be deployed in technical and medical settings as gripper arms, tissue patches, targeted drug delivery, or robots. (See video below.)

It might look like a simple material experiment at first glance, as a brief ultrasound stimulation induces a thin strip of silicone to start bending and arching.

But that’s just the beginning. A team led by Daniel Ahmed, Professor of Acoustic Robotics for Life Sciences and Healthcare, has developed a new class of artificial muscles: flexible membranes that respond to ultrasound with the help of thousands of microbubbles. Social and companion robots: More than just machines?

October 31, 2025 by Sam Francis

For decades, robots were built to weld, lift, inspect, and assemble. Their world was the industrial floor – structured tasks, predictable environments, and a focus on efficiency.

That paradigm is shifting. A new category of machines is emerging, designed not to move pallets or operate tools but to interact, comfort, teach, and keep people company.

Social and companion robots occupy a different space in the automation landscape. Instead of replacing physical labour, they augment human relationships, taking on roles traditionally associated with caregivers, teachers, receptionists, and even friends. Why AI Takeoff Tools Are Becoming the New Standard for Competitive Contractors

October 31, 2025 by Sam Francis

Artificial intelligence is transforming how construction projects are estimated and delivered. For decades, contractors have spent countless hours calculating quantities, measuring blueprints, and checking data across multiple systems.

Now, AI-powered takeoff tools are redefining that process. Using advanced computer vision and machine learning, they can interpret drawings, identify components, and produce highly accurate quantity counts within minutes.

This evolution is not a novelty; it is the foundation of a broader digital shift in the construction industry. As competition intensifies, contractors who adopt AI-assisted takeoff systems find they can respond faster, bid smarter, and deliver projects with greater precision.
