Opinion: ‘Scale’ is the magic word for digital transformation in 2020

In 2019, we saw a 400 percent growth in digital transformation projects moving through the post-implementation stage, according to a recent study by Rockwell Automation.

The maturation of digitization projects will continue throughout 2020, and with this trend, the industry will evolve from exploring the primary benefits of data-driven solutions to understanding how these projects can be used as a resource to help scale smart factory initiatives.

Wagner Logistics implements inVia Robotics software in its Kansas warehouse

inVia Robotics, a provider of warehouse robotics, has implemented its artificial intelligence-driven automation software in Wagner Logistics’ Edgerton, Kansas warehouse.

inVia’s software includes the newly introduced inVia PickMate tool which it says “increases warehouse workers’ productivity and accuracy” by directing them to the most efficient route through the warehouse to take products from inventory to pack out.

Locus Robotics agrees reseller partnership with HighJump

Warehouse automation company Locus Robotics has agreed a partnership with HighJump, a global provider for supply chain solutions.

Locus and HighJump will work together to facilitate the development of integration tools that will allow for faster, seamless implementations to improve productivity and efficiency for shared retail and third-party logistics (3PL) customers.

Mazak showcases machining centre with ‘world’s fastest CNC’

Mazak has demonstrated a new machining centre which it says has the “world’s fastest CNC”.

Mazak says its Integrex i-400S Multi-Tasking machining centre at the upcoming Autosport Engineering and Southern Manufacturing 2019 exhibitions.

Locus Robotics picks ‘record-breaking’ 13 million units during 2019 holiday period

Locus Robotics has broken its own record in terms of productivity numbers in November 2019. (See infographic below.)

The warehouse robot maker delivered more than 13 million units picked on behalf of global retail and third party logistics partners during the critical holiday season.

Universal Robots ‘future-proofs’ production processes at Vietnamese manufacturer with collaborative robots

Universal Robots has helped Vietnam-based Vinacomin Motor Industry Joint Stock Company “future-proof” its production processes with collaborative robots.

VMIC is a subsidiary of the Vinacomin Group, a state-owned coal and mining giant.

VMIC, one of the first state-owned manufacturers to deploy cobots, has seen productivity increase two to three times, with improved product quality, leading to a 50 to 60 percent rise in orders. Robotics and automation technologies are likely to increase productivity and reshore manufacturing, according to a new report.

As the adoption and use of robotics increase, a new report from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, the world’s top-ranked think tank for science and technology policy, evaluates the impact robotics is likely to have on the future of production.

The report shows that robotics has the potential to reshore manufacturing production to developed countries, and it argues that most forecasts exaggerate the impact automation brought by robotics will have on employment. Omron, NTT, and Nokia partner to test 5G networks at manufacturing sites

Omron, NTT Docomo, and Nokia have agreed to jointly conduct trials utilizing the fifth-generation mobile communications system in factories and other manufacturing sites.

Through these trials, the three companies will jointly evaluate the usefulness and possibilities of 5G’s high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency, and simultaneous multiple connections with the aim of solving the challenges facing the manufacturing industry and developing communications technology required in manufacturing sites of the future.

In the manufacturing industry, the demand for wireless communications is increasing as efforts aimed at improving productivity through the use of IoT data make progress in dealing with various issues, such as a shortage of skilled workers and high-mix low-volume production. Going ‘smart’ helps factories make 12 per cent gains, says new report

Implementing smart technologies has enabled factories make gains of up to 12 percent, according to an authoritative new report by Deloitte and the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation.

The areas in which the gains were achieved include: manufacturing output – an important US economic indicator; and factory utilization; and labor productivity.

Looking ahead, smart factory initiatives could lead manufacturers to experience labor productivity increases of 4 percent, which represents a three-fold improvement over the past decade’s average annual growth rate of 0.7 percent (2007-2018). Sisk becomes ‘first’ construction company in Europe to introduce lifting robotics to site

Construction company John Sisk & Son claims it has become the first contractor in Europe to introduce robotics to building projects.

The company says it is investing €150,000 as part of its “commitment to enhance productivity” on its sites and minimise health and safety risks to its workforce.
