AOT robot ready to cut human bones after passing surgical tests

June 22, 2020 by David Edwards

Advanced Osteotomy Tools says its surgical robot has successfully completed all the surgeries required for the “first-in-man” clinical study of the Carlo device for laser-assisted cutting of human bone.

AOT, a Swiss medical technology company, says the tests were undertaken on June 19, 2020. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the performance and safety of the system.

CARLO, short for Cold Ablation Robot-guided Laser Osteotome, is a surgical robotic platform, which is used to cut bones through cold laser ablation – that is, without conventional surgical tools. [Read more…] about AOT robot ready to cut human bones after passing surgical tests

Laser interferometry: An enabling technology for optimized automated manufacturing

May 12, 2020 by David Edwards

By Tyler Steele, product manager – laser interferometers, Zygo

In this article, precision Beryllium mirror manufacturer Cambridge Technology explains how the use of interferometry hardware and software solutions has streamlined its manufacturing processes and added efficiencies as well as time and cost-savings across the company.

Technological advances over recent years have elevated metrology from being a “necessary evil” in manufacturing scenarios to enabling technologies, allowing the measurement of previously impossible part characteristics and therefore driving innovation across numerous industry sectors.

It is arguable that best-in-class metrology solutions are the catalyst that drive the trend towards miniaturization, higher precision, faster throughput, and fewer rejects.

As the old adage goes, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t make it”, but if you can measure to the required accuracy repeatably, then the sky is the limit in terms of producing cutting-edge parts and components. Comau establishes ‘highly specialised’ robotic laser labs

April 21, 2020 by David Edwards

Comau, an industrial automation specialist, has created what it describes as “highly specialized laser laboratories”.

The company says they are designed to support customers as they develop, implement and optimize the laser processes involved in constructing and assembling e-motors and batteries.

Comau now has two labs in Grugliasco, Turin – one specialized in batteries and the other dedicated to e-motors, together with additional labs in Shanghai and Detroit. [Read more…] about Comau establishes ‘highly specialised’ robotic laser labs

SICK’s outdoorScan3 wins Honorable Mention at Engineers’ Choice Awards

February 4, 2020 by David Edwards

SICK’s outdoorScan3 has won an Honorable Mention for Machine Safety Category at Control Engineering 2020 Engineers’ Choice Awards.

Every year, Control Engineering honors new products in automation, control, and instrumentation technology markets with the Engineers’ Choice Awards (ECA).

The ECA program is an annual reader-choice program, created to provide Control Engineering readers with information about top new products in the industry. [Read more…] about SICK’s outdoorScan3 wins Honorable Mention at Engineers’ Choice Awards

How Laser Markers Are the Next Best Thing for Your Products

January 27, 2020 by David Edwards

Laser Markings became a hit as soon as the technology was invented. Almost all the big companies around the world are marking their products through laser.

I’ll get to the benefits of laser marking in a while, but first thing first: What is laser marking in the first place?

It is a simple procedure where your product is marked/tagged with the script/barcode, and so on, of your choice. It can be easily customized to fit your requirements. Just like all other things, it also comes in different qualities. [Read more…] about How Laser Markers Are the Next Best Thing for Your Products

SICK unveils ‘world’s smallest’ safety laser scanner for robots

January 15, 2020 by Sam Francis

SICK has launched what it says is “the world’s smallest safety laser scanner”, the nanoScan3.

The company says the new component is designed for “easy and economical integration into the smallest of machine designs”, particularly for automated guided vehicles, carts, mobile platforms and service robots.

The ultra-compact SICK nanoScan3 is just eight centimetres tall, so it can fit snugly into the spaces in machines where safety laser scanners could not previously have been located. [Read more…] about SICK unveils ‘world’s smallest’ safety laser scanner for robots

SICK launches its ‘most powerful and accurate’ 2D LiDAR sensor yet

December 19, 2019 by Sam Francis

SICK has launched what it describes as its “most powerful and accurate 2D LiDAR sensor yet”.

The LMS4000 is designed for materials handling and intralogistics applications, and is said to maintain its high degrees of accuracy and power even at high speeds, in low ambient light or when goods, packages or parcels are matt black or glossy.

SICK says its LMS4000 2D LiDAR Sensor’s “exceptionally high” laser scanning frequency helps to produce more than half a million measurement points per second to calculate the position, shape, volume or surface quality of goods, packages or components over a wide depth of field, and at ranges up to 3 metres. HRG launches new ‘automated guided vehicle’

October 22, 2019 by Mai Tao

HRG has launched what it describes as an “automated guided vehicle”, although it appears to have the technology that is also found in autonomous mobile robots, which are slightly different.

AGVs are older technology and are limited in their ability to navigate their way round a facility – usually, magnetic strips are fixed to the floor to guide them.

HRG says its AGV integrates “simultaneous localization and mapping”, or SLAM, the navigation technology that gives AMRs their autonomy. [Read more…] about HRG launches new ‘automated guided vehicle’

Laser interferometer verifies Trumpf Trumatic faster and more accurately

August 28, 2019 by David Edwards

When Trumpf saw API’s XD Laser at a trade show, they immediately recognized that it could measure the three degrees of freedom needed for production of their TruMatic 7000 punch laser machine in only a single measurement process.

A subsequent demo at Trumpf’s factory in Ditzingen, Germany, however, revealed more benefits than Trumpf was anticipating. [Read more…] about Laser interferometer verifies Trumpf Trumatic faster and more accurately

New lasers can weld ceramics without furnace, claim scientists

August 23, 2019 by Sam Francis

Smartphones that don’t scratch or shatter. Metal-free pacemakers. Electronics for space and other harsh environments.

These could all be made possible thanks to a new ceramic welding technology developed by a team of engineers at the University of California San Diego and the University of California Riverside.

The process, published in the August 23 issue of Science, uses an ultrafast pulsed laser to melt ceramic materials along the interface and fuse them together. [Read more…] about New lasers can weld ceramics without furnace, claim scientists
