IAM Robotics awarded patent for warehouse robot

IAM Robotics, a Pittsburgh startup that develops and sells autonomous material handling robots, has been awarded what the company says is a “key patent” relating to its robotics technology for logistics.

The patent will be issued on October 10, 2017 as US Patent No. 9,785,911.

Toyota shows off its progress in robotics, autonomous cars and artificial intelligence

Toyota Research Institute has been demonstrating its progress in the development of automated driving technology and other project work to the investor community this week.

Dr Gill Pratt, CEO of TRI, says: “In the last few months, we have rapidly accelerated our pace in advancing Toyota’s automated driving capabilities with a vision of saving lives, expanding access to mobility, and making driving more fun and convenient.

Denso Robotics launches new scara robot

Denso Robotics has launched its latest HSR four-axis scara – selective compliant assembly robot arm – robot. 

The company says the new robot uses advanced vibration control, a newly designed, highly rigid lightweight arm and improved heat dissipation in the base unit to achieve new levels of continuous high-speed performance and repeatability.

Huawei partners with Infosys and Wapwag to launch IoT systems for robots

Huawei is partnering with Infosys and Wapwag to launch a range of internet of things solutions for robotics and automation systems. 

Huawei is mainly a communications company which builds networks and some phones; Infosys is a software developer; and Wapwag is a water management specialist.

UN lists technologies most likely to have the biggest global impact

The United Nations Global Compact has listed a number of technologies which it says are most likely to impact the global population.

Among the list are a number of technologies regularly featured on this website, including robotics, autonomous cars, drones, internet of things, digital agriculture, and additive manufacturing, among others.

Working with PA Consulting Group, the UN promoted what it describes as “breakthrough innovation and disruptive technologies” at a UN Global Compact Leaders Summit.

Bosch and Bayer working on precision agriculture systems

Industrial giant Bosch is teaming up with Bayer, one of the world’s largest biotech companies, to develop precision agriculture systems which they say could help improve harvests by 50 per cent. 

Precision agriculture is a term that refers to the increasing use of technologies such as drones, robots, computers and data analytics in farming. These technologies essentially help farmers micro-manage their farms. Other terms used include smart agriculture and even Agriculture 4.0, but they refer to the same thing.

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that farmers around the world will need to increase yields – the volume of crops they harvests – by 50 per cent by 2050 in order to feed the increasing global population.  [Read more…] about Bosch and Bayer working on precision agriculture systems

DJI launches two new drones and ‘sphere’ vision system

DJI, probably the world’s largest civilian drones maker, has introduced two new drones and a new way for looking at the world, which the company calls “Sphere” panorama. 

The two new drones are called Mavic Pro Platinum and Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian, and they will be showcased at IFA event, in Berlin.

Analysis: New Nest Labs security products face stiff competition, says IHS Markit

Nest Labs has expanded into the home security market with a range of products which includes the Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Hello video doorbell, Nest Cam IQ outdoor security camera, and corresponding software and services. 

The video doorbell uses Google’s facial recognition technology.

Nest Labs is one of the first big movers in the home automation market, and the company is thought to be one of the leaders.
