Universal Robots machine becomes first robot to ring bell at New York Stock Exchange

October 22, 2018 by David Edwards

The New York Stock Exchange welcomes ROBO Global® (NYSE Arca: ROBO) in celebration of its fifth anniversary of listing. Universal Robot’s Collaborative Robot, joined by Doug Yones, Head of Exchange Traded Products, NYSE, rings The Closing Bell®.

The ringing of the closing bell on October 17, 2018, at the New York Stock Exchange was highly unusual as the prestigious task was performed not by a human, but by a robot arm.

The bell ringer, Universal Robots’ UR5e with a two-fingered gripper from Robotiq, is a collaborative robot able to work alongside people with no safety guarding, giving watchers worldwide the opportunity to see just how easily cobots interact with humans.

Universal Robots pioneered the market by selling the first commercially viable cobot in 2008 and has kept its early frontrunner position with a 60 percent global share of the cobot market, selling more cobots than all competitors combined. Earlier this year, UR announced the sale of its 25,000th cobot.  [Read more…] about Universal Robots machine becomes first robot to ring bell at New York Stock Exchange

New book: Leaders need to rethink work to get the most out of AI and automation

October 15, 2018 by Anna

Leaders need new tools to increase automation in their organisations, says Ravin Jesuthasan, future of work expert and Managing Director at Willis Towers Watson, in a new book published this week.

Reinventing Jobs: a 4-step approach for applying automation to work, co-authored with human capital thought leader John Boudreau, presents a four-step framework to give leaders a systematic process for applying new automation to work, supported by dozens of case studies from around the world.

Reinventing Jobs argues that the proliferation of AI and automation options calls for a re-examination of the traditional notion of a “job”, yet dispels the claim that humans will be replaced by machines.

Robotics to aid people with disabilities at work

October 5, 2018 by Anna

Robots are well on the way to becoming ubiquitous in manufacturing, where they are having an impact on the work environment and on jobs themselves.

But what does this new world of work look like? How does it divide work up between humans and machines? And how might robots help create attractive jobs for people with disabilities so they can be participate in the workforce?

AQUIAS, a project conducted by Robert Bosch GmbH, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Industrial Engineering IAO and for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, and ISAK GmbH offers some answers.
