Automation solutions provider Omron Automation Americas will demonstrate a diverse solution portfolio encompassing traceability, flexible manufacturing, human-machine collaboration and more at the upcoming Automate Show in Chicago this April.

The company says it will showcase “applications for the factory of today and that of the future”.

Scientists take first step towards creating terrifying liquid metal robot last seen in Terminator 2

Researchers create new kind of robot composed of many simple particles with no centralized control or single point of failure

The concept of “gray goo”, a robot comprised of billions of nanoparticles, has fascinated science fiction fans for decades. But most researchers have dismissed it as just a wild theory.

Current robots are usually self-contained entities made of interdependent subcomponents, each with a specific function. If one part fails, the robot stops working. In robotic swarms, each robot is an independently functioning machine.

In a new study published today in Nature, researchers at Columbia Engineering and MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab demonstrate for the first time a way to make a robot composed of many loosely coupled components, or “particles”. PalTac selects RightHand Robotics to further automate supply chain operations

RightHand Robotics, a provider of robotic piece-picking solutions, has partnered with PalTac, Japan’s largest wholesaler of consumer packaged goods.

The collaboration will introduce RightHand’s newest piece-picking solution to the Japanese market, with multiple workstations to be installed in PalTac’s newest facility, RDC Saitama, opening later in 2019 in Sugito, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

Nvidia launches $99 ‘Nano’ computer for robotics development

Nvidia has launched the “Jetson Nano” computer, saying it is designed to deal with artificial intelligence and makes it possible to create “millions of intelligent systems”. 

The small but powerful CUDA-X AI computer delivers 472 gigaflops of compute performance for running modern AI workloads and is highly power-efficient, consuming as little as 5 watts.

Corin enters the orthopaedic robotics market by acquiring Omni

UK-based international orthopaedic company Corin Group, backed by the Permira funds, has acquired the US-based Omni Orthopedics, a pioneer in robotic-assisted total knee replacement.

Founded in 1999 by a team of medical device engineers, Omni  is now at the forefront of robotic-assisted knee replacement.

Its OMNIBotics is a unique imageless total knee replacement solution which combines a robotic cutting guide with the world’s first robotic tool to measure ligament function.

The pneumatically-controlled, articulated design gives users the ability to tune the contact force to accommodate specific applications by changing the air pressure.

Majority of companies ‘do not understand safety requirements of collaborative robots’

The vast majority of companies implementing automation technologies “do not understand safety requirements of collaborative robots”, according to a survey undertaken by TM Robotics. 

The company asked for the opinions of automation distributors on current challenges related to robotics for its Global Robotics Report.

Energy giant ExxonMobil is offering $60,000 prize money as part of its first-ever robotics and automation innovation competition.

Organized by BBL Ventures, the “Reverse Robotics Pitch Challenge for ExxonMobil” is open now and is inviting innovation in a number of areas.

Vecna Robotics launches fifth generation Pallet Jack

Vecna Robotics (Vecna) has unveiled its latest product in fifth generation autonomous pallet handling. The new Pallet Jack will be the first self-driving vehicle to include autonomous pallet identification, lifting, and pickup.

The model also features an OEM agnostic base. The enhanced software delivers faster, smoother pickups across a broader variety of pallets and goods, including pallets with bottom boards and partial pallets.

This new technology is a further extension of Vecna’s Autonomy Stack, which is said to instil independence in all its vehicles with dynamic obstacle avoidance, topological reasoning, local decision making, high-confidence navigation, and self-learning capabilities.
