$50 million funding sparks ‘manufacturing technology breakthroughs’ in Ontario

September 9, 2025 by Mai Tao

Companies in four key sectors of Ontario’s economy – advanced manufacturing, agri-food, mining and construction – have been given a significant boost, thanks to a $50 million funding and support program by the Ontario government, led by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI).

One year after its launch, OCI’s Critical Industrial Technologies (CIT) program – which includes up to $1 million for company collaborations and $100,000 for individual businesses to support research and development, equipment purchases, product testing, talent, upskilling and reskilling – has fast-tracked the commercialization of more than 100 emerging technologies that are helping to advance Ontario’s manufacturing competitiveness on the global stage.

OCI president and CEO Claudia Krywiak will highlight some of these success stories and unveil funding and support opportunities still available to Ontario manufacturers – both large and small – as a speaker at the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS) 2025, Canada’s national industry event which takes place at the Toronto Congress Centre from September 29 to October 2. Amazon takes ‘major step’ toward zero-touch manufacturing facilities with Nvidia AI

August 19, 2025 by Mai Tao

Amazon, arguably the world’s largest user of robotics technologies, is said to be “powering big leaps” in zero-touch manufacturing with a new physical AI software solutions and digital twin technologies from Nvidia.

Deployed this month at an unnamed Amazon Devices & Services facility, the company’s innovative, simulation-first approach for zero-touch manufacturing trains robotic arms to inspect diverse devices for product-quality auditing and integrate new goods into the production line – all based on synthetic data, without requiring hardware changes.

This new technology brings together Amazon Devices-created software that simulates processes on the assembly line with products in Nvidia-powered digital twins. Using a modular, AI-powered workflow, the technology offers faster, more efficient inspections compared with the previously used audit machinery. Opinion: Mechanical engineers and robotics form the basis of competing with China

July 28, 2025 by David Edwards

By Shaun Edwards, CTO and co-founder, Plus One Robotics

As it falters in its reshoring efforts against China, the US faces a clear obstacle: mechanical engineers.

According to the New York Times, the data are apparent, with China graduating more than 350,000 mechanical engineers each year, while the US lags behind with a mere 45,000.

This puts the US at a structural disadvantage because its ability to innovate is hindered by a lack of a skilled workforce. [Read more…] about Opinion: Mechanical engineers and robotics form the basis of competing with China
