Designing for Depth: Overcoming Engineering Challenges in Subsea Habitats

May 10, 2025 by David Edwards

As humanity ventures further into the oceans, the concept of living and working beneath the waves has evolved from science fiction to tangible reality.

Subsea habitats – pressurized structures that allow humans to live and conduct research underwater for extended periods – present unique engineering challenges that demand innovation across materials science, structural design, environmental control, and human factors.

Designing these habitats requires a multidisciplinary approach that can withstand immense pressure, guarantee safety, and enable long-term occupancy in one of the planet’s most hostile environments. [Read more…] about Designing for Depth: Overcoming Engineering Challenges in Subsea Habitats

Loxo establishes German subsidiary to expand its autonomous driving business

November 19, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Loxo, a Swiss developer of autonomous driving solutions for logistics, has embarked on its first international expansion with the opening of a new subsidiary in Munich.

Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Bern, Switzerland, Loxo has rapidly established itself as a key player in the field of autonomous driving, with a focus on middle-mile delivery and mobile distribution hub logistics.

The expansion into Germany follows rapidly from Loxo’s successful rollout of Europe’s first Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving technology, which is operational on public roads in Bern, Switzerland, with autonomous driving routes spanning 65 kilometres (40 miles) within the city. German industry proposes new development standard for safe automated driving

February 14, 2024 by David Edwards

Four years ago, the German automotive industry joined forces with 21 partners in a project to develop the world’s first structures for the verification of safety standards for “automated vehicles” – also referred to as autonomous or self-driving vehicles – in an urban environment. The results of the joint Verification and Validation Methods (VVM) project are now available.

The findings of the pre-competitive research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and initiated by the VDA flagship initiative autonomous and connected driving, were discussed in detail at the final presentation at the Carl Benz Arena in Stuttgart.

The higher the level of automated driving and the more complex a system’s area of application, the more factors need to be taken into account during development. The first SAE Level 3 systems for freeway driving and an SAE Level 4 system for driverless parking have already been approved. California certifies Mercedes semi-autonomous drive system

September 6, 2023 by David Edwards

Mercedes‑Benz says its Drive Pilot system for SAE Level 3 conditionally automated driving received certification from California state authorities.

With this significant milestone Mercedes-Benz is the first car manufacturer with authorization to introduce such a SAE Level 3 system in a standard-production vehicle for use on public freeways in the most populous state in the United States.

Drive Pilot will be available in the US market as an option for model year 2024 Mercedes‑Benz S-Class and EQS Sedan models, with the first cars delivered to customers in late 2023. [Read more…] about California certifies Mercedes semi-autonomous drive system

Be afraid. Be slightly afraid: Drivers feel ‘increasingly anxious’ about autonomous cars

March 7, 2023 by Mark Allinson

The results of AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey show that while there is still a high level of interest in partially-automated vehicle technology, attitudes toward fully self-driving vehicles have become increasingly apprehensive.

This year there was a major increase in drivers who are afraid, rising to 68 percent as compared to 55 percent in 2022. This is a 13 percent jump from last year’s survey and the biggest increase since 2020.

AAA believes automakers must be diligent in creating an environment that promotes the use of more advanced vehicle technologies in a secure, reliable, and educational manner. This includes the consistent naming of vehicle systems available to consumers today. [Read more…] about Be afraid. Be slightly afraid: Drivers feel ‘increasingly anxious’ about autonomous cars
