Airbus boss backs hydrogen airplanes as the ‘ultimate solution’

February 18, 2022 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

The CEO of Airbus, currently the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, says he believes hydrogen-powered airplanes are the “ultimate solution” to the unfair criticism of the aerospace industry as a planet-polluting monster.

The World Wildlife Fund says the aviation industry is “one of the fastest-growing sources of the greenhouse gas emissions driving global climate change”, adding that air travel is “currently the most carbon intensive activity an individual can make”.

These things have been true for many decades, but with completely crazy extreme weather systems attacking different parts of the world on an almost weekly basis over the past couple of years, the search for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) has taken on a new urgency. Volvo and Holcim partner on mining project to use autonomous electric haulers

February 14, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Holcim Switzerland have entered a collaboration to jointly test and further develop the use of autonomous electric haulers in a limestone quarry.

Holcim’s quarry Gabenchopf in Siggenthal, Switzerland has been chosen as the site for this project.

The battery-electric haulers currently being tested mark a groundbreaking step in the industry: not only are they quieter and more sustainable than conventional haulers, they are also safer – in fact, they are the world’s first commercially available CE-certified electric, autonomous transport solution for the quarry and cement industries. Will Car Manufacturing Ever Be Fully Automated?

February 13, 2022 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

The other day, I got an email asking me to participate in a survey regarding robots in hotels. Basically, the people behind the study wanted to gauge how comfortable respondents were about letting robots and AI systems take care of different aspects of their stay.

Would they be happy to check in without ever speaking to a human? What about having a robot clean their rooms?

The reason this survey stuck with me is that it posited the possibility that hotels would be staffed by robots in the near future. I wondered if it would be people coming to stay in hotels who would delay this from happening due to technophobia. This is in spite of the fact that mechanisation itself is not fully automated in many industries. [Read more…] about Will Car Manufacturing Ever Be Fully Automated?

Companies and Climate Change: The Interrelation

February 8, 2022 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

Globalization has brought in a drastic shift in the preferences, choices, and tastes of the people. With a vast range of options available in almost every sector of society, people have an option to pick and choose according to their convenience.

However, amidst all these progressions and advancements, it is imperative to remember that all the goods and resources that we use in our daily lives are a product of different manufacturing industries.

Since the demands and expectations from the market have grown, industry and company owners have also equipped themselves with high functioning and reliable technologies that produce optimum results in a minimum span of time. On the other hand, our world is being extremely ignorant of a looming threat that will eventually affect our ecosystem in more ways than one. Governor Whitmer launches ‘first’ US wireless electric vehicle charging road system

February 2, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the award of a contract to build a first in the United States public wireless in-road charging system allowing electric vehicles to charge while in motion and stationary.

A company called Electreon has been selected to build an electric road system in Detroit as part of the inductive vehicle charging pilot program.

Governor Whitmer says: “As we aim to lead the future of mobility and electrification by boosting electric vehicle production and lowering consumer costs, a wireless in-road charging system is the next piece to the puzzle for sustainability. Motion capture is guiding the next generation of extraterrestrial robots

January 25, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

“How do we build robots that can optimally explore space?” is the core question behind Dr Frances Zhu’s research at the University of Hawai’i. One part of the answer is, “with motion capture”.

“It is my hope that my research contributes to the way extraterrestrial robots move and make decisions on other planets,” explains Zhu (main image), an assistant researcher and deputy director at the University’s Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology.

That research is in its early stages, but NASA has seen the value in it and awarded Zhu an EPSCoR grant by the name “Autonomous Rover Operations for Planetary Surface Exploration using Machine Learning Algorithms”.
