Finger Lakes college partners with New Scale Robotics to develop collaborative robot tools

Finger Lakes Community College has been awarded a $50,000 manufacturing grant from the FuzeHub Innovation Fund to support its work with New Scale Robotics, accelerating development of New Scale’s precision measurement and gripping tools for a wide range of collaborative robots.

New Scale has a line of precision grippers, calipers and other tools that install in minutes on cobots from Universal Robots.

New Scale will collaborate with Dr Sam Samanta, head of the Instrumentation and Controls program at FLCC, and his students to develop a Smart Platform that expands plug-and-play compatibility of New Scale Robotics tools to multiple additional cobot brands. Self-driving tech startup Voyage Auto raises $31 million in funding

A self-driving technology startup called Voyage Auto has raised $31 million in Series B funding.

The investment round was led by Franklin Templeton, with significant participation from Khosla Ventures, Jaguar Land Rover’s InMotion Ventures, and Chevron Technology Ventures.

ESMERA opens €200,000 competition to fund small businesses developing robotics solutions

The EU funded robotics project ESMERA – the European SMEs Robotics Applications – has opened its second open call to help fund small businesses developing robotic solutions for enterprise applications.

Within that call, industrial end-users have defined specific challenges that are to be solved by introducing a robotics solution.

Yamaha taps into its $100 million fund to invest in Advanced Farm Technologies

Yamaha is using part of its $100 million investment fund to buy a stake in Advanced Farm Technologies.

Yamaha Motor Ventures & Laboratory Silicon Valley led the Series A funding round for the startup.

GM’s autonomous driving business Cruise raises another $1.15 billion

The autonomous driving business which General Motors acquired three years ago, Cruise, has raised more than $1 billion in its latest funding round, bringing total capital raised to approximately $7 billion.

Cruise says the equity investment of $1.15 billion is from a group comprising institutional investors, including funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, and existing partners GM, SoftBank Vision Fund and Honda.

Dan Ammann, Cruise CEO, says: “Developing and deploying self-driving vehicles at massive scale is the engineering challenge of our generation.

Hitachi establishes venture capital fund for start-up partners

On 1 June, Hitachi is to establish a new corporate venture capital (CVC) fund, Hitachi Ventures Fund, and unit, Hitachi Ventures GmbH (HVG), whose responsibility will be to identify and acquire equity interests in fast-growing innovative start-ups globally.

HVG will hire top external talents with experience and capability on CVC activities to invest to and collaborate with start-ups globally.

Stefan Gabriel, former president of 3M New Ventures, is to be CEO of HVG. The unit will start life with $150M.

Toyota, Denso, and SoftBank pledge another $1 billion investment for Uber

Taxi-sharing app maker Uber has been promised $1 billion in investment from companies including Toyota, Denso, and SoftBank Vision Fund.

The new funds will help accelerate the development and commercialization of its ridesharing services, says Uber in a statement.

Plenty attracts ‘largest-ever agriculture technology investment’ led by SoftBank to develop indoor farms in city centres

A company called Plenty claims it has attracted the “largest-ever agriculture technology investment”. 

The company says the investment will drive its development of its global, large-scale indoor farm network to deliver “radically fresher, affordable food to local communities everywhere”.

Robotics and Automation News: Tell us about GBS Funds and what its aims are. Tell us about the composite and investment fund for the “robotics revolution” as you call it.

Brian Gahsman: GBS Funds is an investment management company which was started by Rob Branton and myself this year. We are launching our first fund, the GBS Global Innovations Fund on October 1st 2016.

The fund’s main focus is investing in companies worldwide which play a critical role in the global robotics and automation revolution. The strategy will also invest in game changing innovations across other diverse industries and sectors.
