ifm and CloudRail agree strategic partnership to provide IIoT solutions

July 17, 2020 by David Edwards

Sensor and automation specialist ifm and the IIoT expert CloudRail have agreed a strategic partnership to pool their skills to improve their positions on the strongly growing market for professional IIoT and cloud solutions. (See video below.)

Industry 4.0, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or digitisation – there are many terms to describe the inexorable trend of networking machines, processes and people. What they all have in common is that they refer to interdisciplinary processes.

Felix Kollmar, CEO of CloudRail, says: “The IIoT has long ago ceased to be an exclusive topic of operation technology (OT).” [Read more…] about ifm and CloudRail agree strategic partnership to provide IIoT solutions

Cloud robotics market predicted to grow to $157.8 billion by 2030

July 9, 2020 by David Edwards

The global market for cloud robotics is predicted to grow to $157.8 billion by 2030, according to ABI Research.

The analyst says cloud computing will be the “great enabler of mobile robotics”, and a massive, multibillion-dollar service opportunity over the next next 10 years.

Though only in its nascent stages, the value of cloud infrastructure to robots is key for both application, encompassing development, configuration, and installation; and operation, which includes maintenance, analytics, and control. DHL partners with Microsoft and Blue Yonder to develop platform for warehouse robots

June 24, 2020 by David Edwards

DHL Supply Chain has launched what it describes as a new “plug and play” robotics platform in collaboration with Microsoft, and artificial intelligence driven digital fulfillment provider Blue Yonder.

The robotics platform significantly reduces integration time and programming efforts to on-board new automation devices into warehouse facilities, while giving DHL customers more flexibility in selecting suitable robotics systems according to their individual business needs.

The solution leverages Microsoft Azure IoT and cloud platform services. [Read more…] about DHL partners with Microsoft and Blue Yonder to develop platform for warehouse robots

Arrow Electronics and Exor launch IoT edge platform for smart factories

June 5, 2020 by David Edwards

Arrow Electronics has collaborated with Exor Embedded to create gigaSOM gS01, a full production design and an additional development kit featuring a high-performance, energy-efficient system on module (SOM) for IoT edge deployments.

The SOM combines the power and efficiency of the Intel Atom E3900 processor series with the flexibility of an Intel Cyclone 10 GX FPGA, connected with a high-bandwidth dual-lane PCIe interface to create a unified high-performing engine.

gigaSOM gS01 is a combined X86 CPU and Intel high-speed FPGA design on a single system on module. [Read more…] about Arrow Electronics and Exor launch IoT edge platform for smart factories

Here’s what you may not know about the world of cloud

May 25, 2020 by Polly

Although cloud computing has been around since the 1960s, the use of cloud computing in its modern context didn’t take off until 2006.

Cloud computing is the process of delivering computing services over the internet using a provider’s data services. Common public cloud offerings include Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

However, even though the phrase “in the cloud” has become ubiquitous in current technology, there are many things that are unclear for people, particularly for those who are exploring what the cloud means beneath the surface. Here are a few things you may not know. [Read more…] about Here’s what you may not know about the world of cloud

Opinion: Cloud robotics is a game changer, but three challenges lurk

May 21, 2020 by Sam Francis

By Rhys Davies, product manager at Canonical, publisher of Ubuntu open-source operating system

The service robotics market is projected to soar from $37 billion worldwide this year to $102.5 billion by 2025, according to ResearchAndMarkets. Every week, it seems, we see some cool new application, like the warehouse automation solution shown in the video below.

A major reason for robotics’ emergence as a hot technology trend often spoken in the same breath as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) is the convergence of robotics with the cloud.

Cloud robotics – a term first coined in 2010 by then-Google research scientist James Kuffner – provides vast amounts of processing power and storage resources to expand robot capabilities. [Read more…] about Opinion: Cloud robotics is a game changer, but three challenges lurk

10 key considerations when developing your robot’s cloud backend

April 9, 2020 by Sam Francis

If you work in robotics, odds are you’re more interested in robots than data pipelines and cloud architecture.

Unfortunately, the latter are just as much a part of modern robotics as sensors and servo motors. If you hope to successfully develop and scale your robotics operations, you’ll first have to run the gauntlet that is building a cloud-based “backend” – the server side of the network.

Given the inherent complexity of this task, there are plenty of opportunities for oversight. So, before all else, it’s imperative that you and your team take the time to carefully consider and develop a plan of action. The future of AI in cars and personal car leasing

March 23, 2020 by Polly

In the world we live in there are many ways to access a car, from buying one outright to personal car leasing, renting and a variety of other ways.

Of course, while the ways to get hold of a car are almost endless, the options available to you are just as big, if not bigger.

And, while you may have your eye on a specific car, have you ever stopped to think about the type of car you’ll be driving, or not driving, in the very near future? [Read more…] about The future of AI in cars and personal car leasing
