World’s tallest 3D-printed tower unveiled in Swiss Alps

May 22, 2025 by Sam Francis

A new architectural marvel, the Tor Alva, or “White Tower”, was inaugurated this week in the remote Swiss alpine village of Mulegns.

Standing at an impressive 30 meters (approximately 98 feet), it claims the title of the world’s tallest 3D-printed structure.

The project is a significant step in showcasing the potential of digital fabrication techniques in construction, particularly for creating load-bearing structures without the need for traditional formwork. [Read more…] about World’s tallest 3D-printed tower unveiled in Swiss Alps

ABB Robotics teams with innovative tech start-up to deliver sustainable and affordable housing

March 30, 2024 by Mark Allinson

ABB Robotics is collaborating with UK-based tech start-up Automated Architecture, or AUAR, to advance the use of robotic micro-factories to build affordable, sustainable low energy timber homes.

AUAR’s transformative approach to integrating robotic automation into the building process will tackle skills shortages, boost sustainability, and improve health and safety by deploying robots in a global network of local micro-factories.

These micro-factories will construct energy-efficient, affordable buildings from sheet timber. AUAR reports today that it has completed a £2.6 million seed round led by deep-tech and AI fund Miles Ahead, alongside ABB Robotics & Automation Ventures and several other investors. Ambarella unveils ‘world’s first’ centrally processed 4D imaging radar architecture for autonomous vehicles

December 7, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Ambarella, an edge AI semiconductor company, has launched what it says is “the world’s first centralized 4D imaging radar architecture”, which allows both central processing of raw radar data and deep, low-level fusion with other sensor inputs – including cameras, lidar and ultrasonics.

The company says this is a breakthrough architecture which provides greater environmental perception and safer path planning in AI-based ADAS and Level 2+ to L5 autonomous driving systems, as well as autonomous robotics.

It features Ambarella’s Oculii radar technology, including the only AI software algorithms that dynamically adapt radar waveforms to the surrounding environment—providing high angular resolution of 0.5 degrees, an ultra-dense point cloud up to tens of thousands of points per frame and a long detection range up to 500+ meters. Mercedes-Benz claims its ‘Drive Pilot’ is world’s first internationally certified Level 3 automated car technology

September 14, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Mercedes-Benz says its Drive Pilot automated driver assistance system has become the world’s first internationally certified Level 3 automated car technology. The company adds that it backs redundancy for safe conditionally automated driving.

When it comes to conditionally automated driving (SAE Level 3), safety and reliability are the top priorities for Mercedes-Benz. Drive Pilot is therefore based on a system architecture that enables safe control of all situations that could potentially arise.

To this end, braking, steering, power supply and some parts of the sensor system are designed with physical and functional redundancy. By adopting this safety‑focused approach to system design, Mercedes-Benz is setting completely new benchmarks in automated driving. TTTech Auto and Infineon design new chip architecture for highly automated driving

November 10, 2021 by Mark Allinson

TTTech Auto and Infineon Technologies have developed key components for a fail-operational electronic architecture for highly automated driving of SAE Level 3 and 4.

This enables the safe and reliable processing of, for example, radar or LiDAR camera sensor data and is targeting car and technology manufacturers. The fail-operational architectural concept and its key components ensure the safe operation of highway pilot functions, valet parking and autonomous truck driving in case individual functions fail.

The joint research contributed to the successful completion of the European PRYSTINE (Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles) project. With a budget of about €50 million, PRYSTINE aimed to realize safe automated driving by fail-operational urban surround perception.
