Amazon marks deployment of 1 millionth robot and unveils new AI foundation model for its robots

July 1, 2025 by Sam Francis

Amazon Robotics has reached two major milestones in its robotics and AI operations: the deployment of its one millionth robot and the launch of a new generative AI foundation model designed to optimize its global fleet of warehouse robots.

The new AI model, called DeepFleet, is expected to improve robot travel efficiency by 10 percent across Amazon’s fulfillment network, which spans more than 300 facilities worldwide. The company says the technology will support faster customer deliveries and reduce operational costs.

“Think of DeepFleet as an intelligent traffic system for our robotic fleet,” writes Scott Dresser, vice president of Amazon Robotics, in a blog post on one of the company’s websites. “It optimizes how robots move within our facilities, reducing congestion and improving efficiency.” [Read more…] about Amazon marks deployment of 1 millionth robot and unveils new AI foundation model for its robots

Siemens completes acquisition of ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology business

July 1, 2025 by Sam Francis

Europe’s largest engineering company Siemens has closed its acquisition of ebm-papst‘s industrial drive technology business. In the future, it will be marketed using the name “Mechatronic Systems” at Siemens.

The business has about 650 employees and its portfolio includes intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the extra-low voltage protection range, innovative driving systems used in free-moving, driverless transport systems, and other applications.

This acquisition complements the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, strengthening Siemens’ position as a leading provider of flexible manufacturing automation solutions. [Read more…] about Siemens completes acquisition of ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology business

MIT develops vision-based system that gives machines ‘bodily self-awareness’

July 1, 2025 by Sam Francis

In an office at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), a soft robotic hand carefully curls its fingers to grasp a small object.

The intriguing part isn’t the mechanical design or embedded sensors – in fact, the hand contains none. Instead, the entire system relies on a single camera that watches the robot’s movements and uses that visual data to control it.

This capability comes from a new system CSAIL scientists developed, offering a different perspective on robotic control. Rather than using hand-designed models or complex sensor arrays, it allows robots to learn how their bodies respond to control commands, solely through vision. Kuka launches cleanroom-certified robot for semiconductor and electronics industries

June 30, 2025 by Sam Francis

Kuka has introduced a cleanroom-certified version of its autonomous mobile robot (AMR), the KMR iisy CR, designed specifically for sensitive environments such as semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

The new model meets ISO cleanroom class 3 standards, as confirmed by the Fraunhofer Institute, and is available in 11- and 15-kilogram payload variants.

Kuka’s latest autonomous solution, the KMR iisy CR, combines a mobile platform with the six-axis LBR iisy CR robot arm to deliver cleanroom-compatible automation. [Read more…] about Kuka launches cleanroom-certified robot for semiconductor and electronics industries

Can robots play football? Why AI still struggles with physical movement

June 30, 2025 by Sam Francis

The world’s first AI robot football match shows how far we still have to go

At first glance, it looked like a slow-motion parody of the world’s most beloved sport. On a small indoor pitch in Beijing, teams of humanoid robots wobbled across the turf, scanning the field with glowing blue eyes, tripping over their own feet, and occasionally collapsing in awkward heaps. At one point, two machines had to be stretchered off after failing to stand up again.

Yet for the engineers behind the event, this wasn’t a failure – it was a breakthrough.

Staged in June 2025, China’s first fully autonomous robot football match marked a milestone in the development of embodied artificial intelligence. Each of the robots, including several built on the well-known Nao platform, played without any remote control or manual input. [Read more…] about Can robots play football? Opinion: Brain Corp president outlines how robotics can transform information overload into operational intelligence

June 27, 2025 by Sam Francis

By Michel Spruijt, president, Brain Corp International

Here’s an uncomfortable truth: we’re drowning in data – and it’s making us dumber, not smarter.

Global data production is accelerating at a breathtaking pace, from 64 zettabytes (or 64 trillion gigabytes) in 2020 to an estimated 170 ZB by 2025.

To put that in perspective, that’s enough data to stream every movie ever made simultaneously on 50 billion devices. [Read more…] about Opinion: Brain Corp president outlines how robotics can transform information overload into operational intelligence

What is a robot? From mechanical helpers to intelligent agents

June 26, 2025 by Sam Francis

This is the first in a series of articles in which we ask – and try and answer – the most frequently asked questions in robotics

Ask anyone what a robot is, and you’ll likely get a confident answer: “A machine that walks and talks like a human.”

Some people may offer something slightly more technical – perhaps “a programmable machine that can carry out tasks automatically”.

Both are right, to a point. But as we dig deeper, we find that the question “What is a robot?” quickly becomes more complicated than it first appears. [Read more…] about What is a robot? From mechanical helpers to intelligent agents
