World’s largest chipmaker TSMC to build $12 billion facility in the US

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has unveiled plans to invest $12 billion in Phoenix, Arizona – building an advanced semiconductor manufacturing fabrication.

In December 2022, the company announced its commitment to build a second fab in Phoenix, increasing its total investment to $40 billion.

Then in April 2024, the US Department of Commerce and TSMC Arizona announced up to $6.6 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, fulfilling a goal to bring the most advanced chip manufacturing in the world to the United States. TSMC and Japanese partners plan to build second semiconductor manufacturing plant

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Denso and Toyota have jointly announced further investment into Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, TSMC’s majority-owned manufacturing subsidiary in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

The four companies plan to build a second fab, which is scheduled to begin operation by the end of the 2027 calendar year. Toyota will also take a minority stake.

TSMC’s chairman: Real reasons for the global chip shortage

In terms of severity the automotive industry was among the early victims who experienced the adverse effect of the global chip shortage.

It led to disrupted supply chains, subsequent halted auto production and loss of income for auto manufacturers.
