CorTec receives FDA ‘breakthrough’ designation for brain-computer interface in stroke rehabilitation

April 11, 2026 by Sam Francis

CorTec has received “Breakthrough Device Designation” from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Brain Interchange system, a fully implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) designed to support motor recovery in stroke patients.

The designation applies to the use of direct cortical electrical stimulation to treat chronic stroke-related impairments, marking what the company describes as the first BCI globally to receive this recognition specifically for stroke motor rehabilitation.

The FDA’s Breakthrough Device program is intended for technologies that may provide more effective treatment for life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions, offering developers prioritized review and closer interaction with regulators. German technology company CorTec implants second human with its brain-computer interface

March 4, 2026 by David Edwards

Second implantation at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle marks continued progress in the FDA-approved study informed by promising results from the first participant.

CorTec, a pioneer in active implantable medical technologies, has announced the “successful second implantation” of its proprietary Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system, the Brain Interchange, in an FDA‑approved clinical trial involving stroke patients at Harborview Medical Center, a major site of UW Medicine.

The implantation follows encouraging neurological gains observed in the study’s first participant, whose rehabilitation progress has strengthened confidence in CorTec’s fully implantable platform for stroke recovery.

This represents another key milestone in the joint effort to evaluate CorTec’s fully implantable closed-loop BCI platform, developed and manufactured entirely in Germany, for therapeutic applications in neurological disorders. Swiss university shows brain-computer interface for controlling robots

February 2, 2022 by David Edwards

A Swiss university called the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne has showcased a new brain-computer interface that can be used to control robots. (See video below.)

Unlike previous BCI’s famously demonstrated to former US president, Barack Obama, the EPFL brain-computer interface does not require a hole to be drilled in the user’s head.

Two EPFL research groups teamed up to develop a machine-learning program that can be connected to a human brain and used to command a robot. [Read more…] about Swiss university shows brain-computer interface for controlling robots

OpenBCI has launched a new version of its brain-computer interface as well as new electrodes which connect to the device.

The device itself resembles a cycling helmet and measure brainwaves, or electroencephalogram data, to use the technical term.

The company also provides software and a biosensing board, all of which enable users to monitor the electrical activity of their brains.  [Read more…] about Brain-computer interfaces: Devices to enable you to control robots with your thoughts
