Groupe PSA to starts autonomous driving tests on open roads in China

Groupe PSA has obtained a licence to start autonomous driving tests on open roads in Chongqing, China, the first French carmaker to do so.

Groupe PSA has autonomous car experience in Europe, the challenge is to integrate Groupe PSA’s technology into the Chinese ecosystem as the environment, infrastructure, map system and road users are different.

The company is the first car manufacturer to have tested the autonomous car on open roads in France from July 2015 onwards, as well as the first carmaker to obtain the authorisations to carry out autonomous mode tests with “non-expert” drivers in March 2017.

DuPont breaks ground on new European headquarters for industrial biosciences

DuPont Industrial Biosciences  has broken ground  on its new site at the Leiden Bio Science Park in Oegstgeest, the Netherlands.

The state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary facility will use the tools of modern biotechnology to make industrial processes more efficient and products more sustainable.

The bio-based solutions created in Leiden will have a direct impact on some of the most pressing societal issues of today, says the company.

Continental concludes Kathrein Automotive acquisition

Continental has completed the acquisition of Kathrein Automotive GmbH, the automotive division of Rosenheim-based antenna and satellite technology manufacturer Kathrein, which makes intelligent vehicle antennas.

Potential applications range from remote access keys and navigation applications through to telematics solutions. A connected vehicle can contain over 22 installed antennas.

Continental can now offer a broad portfolio ranging from rod antennas to the Intelligent Antenna Module.

Vector consolidates automotive electronics position with takeover of Tesis

Vector, a specialist in developing and testing software and vehicle electronics located in Stuttgart, Germany, has completed a full takeover of Munich-based Tesis.

Tesis specializes in simulation solutions for virtual road testing – in particular, real-time-capable engine and vehicle models.

Samsung makes ‘industry’s first’ 1 terabyte embedded universal flash storage

Samsung Electronics has begun mass producing the industry’s first one-terabyte (TB) embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 2.1, for use in next-generation mobile applications.

Four years after introducing the first UFS solution, the 128-gigabyte (GB) eUFS, Samsung has passed the one terabyte threshold in smartphone storage.

Smartphone users will soon have storage capacity comparable to a premium notebook PC, without having to pair their phones with additional memory cards.

Intel introduces new tracking camera for autonomous devices

Intel has introduced the Intel RealSense Tracking Camera T265, a new class of stand-alone inside-out tracking device that will provide developers with a  building block for autonomous devices.

The T265 uses proprietary visual inertial odometry simultaneous localisation and mapping (V-SLAM) technology with computing at the edge and is suitable for applications that require a highly accurate and low-latency tracking solution, including robotics, drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality.

The camera is powered by the Intel Movidius Myriad 2 vision processing unit (VPU), which directly handles all the data processing necessary for tracking on the machine.

Zalando to use GreyOrange warehouse robots in its newest fulfillment center

Robotics and warehouse automation company, GreyOrange, says its Butler system warehouse robot has been installed in the supply chain of Zalando, a leading online fashion and lifestyle products e-commerce retailer in Europe.

The new 30,000 square metre fulfillment center, about the size of three football fields, is located in Brunna, near Stockholm, Sweden. It is equipped with the most advanced automation technology in Zalando’s portfolio.

Honda will premiere its new electric vehicle prototype at 2019 Geneva Motor Show

Honda has confirmed the global premiere of a prototype version of its new electric vehicle will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.

Honda’s new electric vehicle is developed with a focus on functionality and purpose and the prototype sketch demonstrates this through its clean, simple and unique design. The image highlights a clear link to Honda’s Urban EV Concept initially shown at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The debut is a further demonstration of Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’, a commitment that two thirds of European sales will feature electrified technology by 2025. A mass production version of the car will be on sale later in the year.
