From Conventional Diggers to Robot-Operated Earth-Movers: The Next Hire Revolution

November 6, 2025 by Sam Francis

Earth-moving equipment has always been a symbol of raw mechanical strength – thundering engines, hydraulic muscle, and the unmistakable hum of steel meeting soil. But over the last decade, the construction and hire sectors have been quietly rewiring their future.

Sensors, automation platforms, AI-driven precision, and robotics are now shaping a new generation of diggers that no longer rely solely on human hands. What once required long hours, expert operators, and considerable on-site coordination is becoming more efficient, safer, and far more predictable.

Contractors looking for an edge are increasingly turning to smarter machines, and hire companies are recognising that a fleet can no longer compete on horsepower alone. The shift from conventional diggers to semi-autonomous and fully robotic earth-movers is reshaping the entire rental model. Construction sector looks to humanoid robots as labour shortages intensify, says McKinsey

November 5, 2025 by Sam Francis

The global construction industry is accelerating efforts to adopt humanoid robots as it grapples with a persistent productivity slump and ongoing labour shortages, according to a new report from McKinsey & Company.

In a note emailed to Robotics & Automation News, a spokesperson for McKinsey highlighted the pressure facing the sector.

“Stuck in a cycle of meager productivity growth rates – which stood at only 0.4 percent from 2000-2022 – and with talent pools continuing to thin, it isn’t surprising to see that the construction industry is struggling to keep up with demand and is leaving no stone unturned in hopes of innovation – including humanoid robots.” [Read more…] about Construction sector looks to humanoid robots as labour shortages intensify, says McKinsey

Kuka partners with Kleusberg to ‘bring advanced automation to modular construction’

November 2, 2025 by Sam Francis

Industrial automation company Kuka and modular construction specialist Kleusberg have formed a partnership to bring advanced automation to modular construction, with the goal of modernising and streamlining manufacturing at Kleusberg’s plant near Halle (Saale).

The cooperation aims to install full robotic welding systems for floor and ceiling modules, forming part of a long-term plan to expand the use of automation in building production.

Beginning in 2027, Kleusberg will deploy a flexible, robot-based welding system supplied by Kuka. The turnkey line will use five industrial robots to weld more than 2,000 metres of 2D floor and ceiling frames every week across a production area of over 1,000 square metres. Why AI Takeoff Tools Are Becoming the New Standard for Competitive Contractors

October 31, 2025 by Sam Francis

Artificial intelligence is transforming how construction projects are estimated and delivered. For decades, contractors have spent countless hours calculating quantities, measuring blueprints, and checking data across multiple systems.

Now, AI-powered takeoff tools are redefining that process. Using advanced computer vision and machine learning, they can interpret drawings, identify components, and produce highly accurate quantity counts within minutes.

This evolution is not a novelty; it is the foundation of a broader digital shift in the construction industry. As competition intensifies, contractors who adopt AI-assisted takeoff systems find they can respond faster, bid smarter, and deliver projects with greater precision. Interview with Bedrock Robotics CEO Boris Sofman: ‘The economics are compelling’

October 8, 2025 by Mai Tao

Over the past couple of years, the level of interest in construction robotics has surged. This is not surprising given the tantalising demos by new robotics companies that show what autonomous machines could do on building sites.

At the forefront of turning that promise into reality is Bedrock Robotics, led by co-founder and CEO Boris Sofman.

After pivotal roles at Anki and Waymo, Sofman has embarked on one of the boldest pivots in the autonomy space: applying machine learning and robotics to earthmoving, excavation, and other heavy-duty construction work.
