Siemens unveils its first virtual PLC and new automation products

May 26, 2023 by David Edwards

Siemens has unveiled several new automation focused products, including its first virtual programmable logic controller, based on the functions and operation of the Simatic S7-1500 PLC and independent of its hardware.

The virtual PLC can be downloaded similar to an app and integrated directly into the IT environment, helping customers unlock the potential of digitalization.

Siemens also announced its first Sinamics drive to join the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, the new Sinamics G220 high-performance multi-purpose, adjustable speed drive. [Read more…] about Siemens unveils its first virtual PLC and new automation products

Ready Robotics ‘making robotics system design easier’ for non-programmers

May 24, 2023 by David Edwards

Robotics hardware traditionally requires programmers to deploy it. Ready Robotics wants to change that with its “no code” software aimed at people working in manufacturing who haven’t got programming skills.

The Columbus, Ohio, startup is a spinout of robotics research from Johns Hopkins University. Kel Guerin was a PhD candidate there leading this research when he partnered with Benjamin Gibbs, who was at Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, to land funding and pursue the company, now led by Gibbs as CEO.

Guerin, who’s now chief innovation officer at the startup, says: “There was this a-ha moment where we figured out that we could take these types of visual languages that are very easy to understand and use them for robotics.” [Read more…] about Ready Robotics ‘making robotics system design easier’ for non-programmers

Nvidia CEO donates $50 million to Oregon State University, which promptly builds a $200 million supercomputing center

May 21, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang and his wife, Lori, have donated $50 million to their alma mater, Oregon State University, to advance research in AI, climate science and robotics. The university will use the donation to build an engineering complex with an AI supercomputer to help students and faculty address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

As a civil engineer, Scott Ashford used explosives to make the ground under Japan’s Sendai airport safer in an earthquake.

Now, as the dean of the engineering college at Oregon State University, he’s at ground zero of another seismic event.

In its biggest fundraising celebration in nearly a decade, Oregon State announced plans today for a $200 million center where faculty and students can plug into resources that will include one of the world’s fastest university supercomputers.

The 150,000-square-foot center, due to open in 2025, will accelerate work at Oregon State’s top-ranked programs in agriculture, computer sciences, climate science, forestry, oceanography, robotics, water resources, materials sciences and more with the help of AI. Modern cybersecurity solutions: SIEM or MSSP?

May 1, 2023 by Mark Allinson

What does SIEM mean?

SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) – the definition is that it is a software system that allows you to detect threats and respond to security incidents. It monitors data about security events in real time and provides a historical analysis from a wide range of sources that record events and contextual data.

More advanced SIEM systems and managed SIEM providers are able to combine events from different components of the IT system together to create a new higher-level event.

The main problem for security engineers is that there is too much data to be able to get even a rough overview. That’s why we need automation to distinguish those events that pose a threat or are otherwise interesting to our business from the multitude of events.
