Eviden launches ‘Europe’s most powerful supercomputer’

September 5, 2025 by Mai Tao

Eviden, the Atos Group business unit specializing in advanced computing, says its in-house-built Jupiter Booster – a partition designed for large-scale simulations and AI training – has been inaugurated today.

The event took place at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre in Germany, in the presence of Friedrich Merz, Federal Chancellor of Germany, Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space and Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Already listed as Europe’s most powerful HPC and AI system and the 4th most powerful in the world, Jupiter is set to be the first in Europe to surpass the threshold of one quintillion calculations per second – the equivalent power of 10 million modern desktop computers. Kistler to showcase AI-supported automated quality control in injection molding for medtech

September 5, 2025 by Mai Tao

Quality assurance in medical technology is undergoing a radical change: away from random sampling and toward automated 100 percent inspection.

This involves automated quality control of each individual part using AI-supported calculation of key product characteristics.

The inspection is based on data, such as cavity pressure, which is taken directly from the injection molding tool. Such innovations will be showcased by Kistler at K 2025 (Düsseldorf, October 8-15, hall 10 / booth F51). ETH Zurich’s ANYmal robot learns to play badminton using reinforcement learning

September 5, 2025 by Mai Tao

ETH Zurich researchers have pushed their quadruped robot, ANYmal, into new territory: the badminton court.

A new video released by the university shows the four-legged robot attempting to return shots using a racket, advanced vision systems, and reinforcement learning-based controls. (See video below.)

ANYmal, built by ANYbotics, developed as a versatile quadruped platform, uses dual cameras to track the shuttlecock in flight. The system looks for the shuttle’s color, calculates its trajectory, and then directs the robot’s motors to move into position and execute a return shot. WSU researchers design robot that can pick ‘hidden strawberries’

September 5, 2025 by Mai Tao

By Shawn Vestal, WSU News

Strawberries are delicate and hard to harvest – easily bruised and often hidden under a canopy of leaves.

This creates headaches for scientists trying to design robotic harvesters. Now a Washington State University-led team has designed one that combines an artificial-intelligence vision system, soft silicone “fingers”, and a fan that gently move leaves out of the way to get at hidden fruit.

Experiments in the lab and in outdoor fields showed that the harvester correctly detected strawberries 80 percent of the time, on average, and could classify whether the berries were hidden 93 percent of the time. [Read more…] about WSU researchers design robot that can pick ‘hidden strawberries’
