Will the 90-day tariff pause spark a manufacturing exodus from China?

April 18, 2025 by Mark Allinson

With President Trump back in office and reaffirming his commitment to reshoring US manufacturing, the White House has implemented a 90-day pause on tariffs for all countries except China.

While framed as a temporary measure, the move could prove to be a turning point in global manufacturing strategy.

The central question now is: Will companies use this brief window to quietly shift operations out of China – and perhaps even back to the US? [Read more…] about Will the 90-day tariff pause spark a manufacturing exodus from China?

Manufacturing content: Is Trump’s tariffs policy about economic justice?

April 13, 2025 by Mark Allinson

President Donald Trump is once again placing American manufacturing at the center of his economic agenda, promising to bring back industrial jobs and rebuild the nation’s productive base. His primary tool for doing so? Tariffs.

These duties on imported goods are designed to make foreign products more expensive, creating space for domestic producers to compete.

The idea is simple: if it costs more to buy a product from China or Germany, then producing it in Ohio or Michigan suddenly makes more economic sense. [Read more…] about Manufacturing content: Is Trump’s tariffs policy about economic justice?

Trump grants tariff exemptions for Apple and other tech firms

April 13, 2025 by Mark Allinson

President Donald Trump has rolled back some of his most aggressive trade measures by granting tariff exemptions for a range of consumer electronics, offering critical relief to companies such as Apple, Dell, and Nvidia.

In guidance issued late Friday, the US Customs and Border Protection agency confirmed that smartphones, laptops, computer chips, and other electronics would be excluded from the administration’s latest round of reciprocal tariffs targeting China.

The exemptions apply retroactively from April 5 and cover approximately 20 product categories. [Read more…] about Trump grants tariff exemptions for Apple and other tech firms

Canada imposes tariffs on US goods in retaliation

August 11, 2020 by Mark Allinson

Canada is to impose tariffs on American imports in retaliation for the recent decision by the US to levy a 10 percent tax on Canadian aluminum imports.

Canada’s deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland says that the tariffs would match the US taxes “dollar for dollar”, according to a story on Manufacturing.net.

President Donald Trump (main picture) has been expressing his dissatisfaction with the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement since coming to office and at one point wanted to take America out of it. [Read more…] about Canada imposes tariffs on US goods in retaliation

The proposed 5 percent tariff on all Mexican imports is yet to be made official, but Trump’s announcement has already caused concern across a range of sectors.

Trump said today on Twitter: “On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed. Trump trade tariffs to hit $300 billion worth of Chinese goods

May 14, 2019 by Mai Tao

US President Donald Trump’s proposed increase in tariffs will hit $350 billion worth of goods imported from China, according to economic analysts.

Trump announced his intention to impose the additional tariffs recently in a tweet, but the US and China are currently locked in trade talks and there may be some modifications to the proposal.

The effects of his announcement, however, have been far-reaching, and are said to be the reason for the $1 trillion fall in share prices around the world.

Comments reported by the South China Morning Post say Chinese exporters are decrying Trump as a business “killer” who “never plays by the rules”.

One exporter, Liao Yu, who produces bags and suitcases, said: “A 25 per cent [tariff] will kill everyone.”
