Spike Dynamics open-sources micro linear piezo actuators that enable ‘muscle-like movement’

September 15, 2025 by Sam Francis

Spike Dynamics, an innovator in advanced actuation technology, announces the open release of its linear piezo actuators, which the company describes as “a breakthrough designed to mimic natural muscle movement in an ultra-compact form”.

By open-sourcing the design, the company aims to accelerate innovation in robotics and wearable devices, where traditional motors are often too bulky, noisy, or fragile.

Unlike traditional product launches, Spike Dynamics is taking a collaborative approach. The company has open-sourced its NASA reviewed actuator design, making it available to researchers, engineers, and startups who want to explore, test, and adapt the technology. MMI’s robotic microsurgery system integrates two new technologies

July 14, 2025 by David Edwards

Medical Microinstruments, a robotics company developing increasing treatment options and improving clinical outcomes for patients with complex conditions, has revealed details of “the first clinical use of two new technologies that expand the potential of robotic-assisted microsurgery: the NanoWrist dissection instruments and the Synaptix Digital Surgery Platform”.

Performed by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London, a leading cancer center, the case marks a significant milestone in the evolution of robotic-assisted microsurgery, enabling precise tissue dissection and integrated digital workflow for the first time with the Symani Surgical System.

The NanoWrist dissection instruments include scissors and forceps and are the world’s first fully wristed robotic instruments designed specifically for dissection in open microsurgery. [Read more…] about MMI’s robotic microsurgery system integrates two new technologies

Distalmotion gains FDA clearance for robotic surgery system

June 7, 2025 by Sam Francis

Distalmotion, a robotic surgery company, has received FDA 510(k) clearance for the use of its Dexter Robotic Surgery System in adult cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal).

This milestone represents the second approved indication in the US, following De Novo clearance for inguinal hernia repair in Q4 2024.

Greg Roche, CEO of Distalmotion, says: “Cholecystectomy is a key procedure in general surgery, with approximately one million cases performed annually – of which 60 percent are performed in outpatient settings. [Read more…] about Distalmotion gains FDA clearance for robotic surgery system
