Demand for industrial robots to treble in automotive industry

The automotive industry’s demand for industrial robots is forecast to treble in the next seven years, according to a new report. 

The auto industry has always been the biggest buyer of industrial robots, accounting for almost half of all units sold in North America, according to the International Federation of Robotics.

European scientists show off humanoid robot that can put out fires

Scientists in Europe have demonstrated a humanoid robot which can put out fires and do similar kinds of dangerous work in the aftermath of an industrial accident. (See video below.)

The research project was led by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, and was conducted in collaboration with University of Pisa in Italy, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

Alien robot to visit International Space Station

The International Space Station is to receive a visit from an alien robot called Cimon, pronounced Kimon, from Planet Earth. 

Cimon – Crew Interactive Mobile CompanioN – was developed by Airbus in cooperation with IBM, and is described as an artificial intelligence-based assistant for astronauts for the DLR, or German, Space Administration.

The technology demonstrator, which is the size of a medicine ball and weighs around 5 kg, will be tested on the ISS by Alexander Gerst during the European Space Agency’s Horizons mission between June and October 2018. [Read more…] about Alien robot to visit International Space Station

Humanoid robots will take over the world, claims industry group

Your home is in line to be taken over by a humanoid robot, if the views of an industry group are anything to go by. 

Roboticists and technologies have long dreamed of building humanoids capable of moving around the house and doing chores just like the average human.

Robot takes centre stage in designer retail shop window

The Bottletop shop boasts the title of world’s first zero waste store design, and has an interior that champions the use of waste plastic and advanced KUKA robotics.

The KUKA six axis industrial robot KR240 is currently in situ within a three dimensional print (3Dp) application at Ai Build, providing a means to deliver multiple, small scale three dimensional structures, that form the decorative interior at London retailer Bottletop’s flagship branch, on Regent Street.

The shop boasts the title of world’s first zero waste store design, and has an interior that champions the use of waste plastic and advanced KUKA robots. A key differentiator adopted by Ai Build; sustainable, functional construction aimed at providing clients with the quickest and most cost effective route to production.

CeMAT 2018: Knowledge platform for logistics providers and supply chain managers

This year, CeMAT will feature another excellent set of forums. Together with major partners such as VDMA (Germany’s mechanical engineering industry association), BVL (Germany’s logistics association), the Fraunhofer IML Institute and the EHI Retail Institute, CeMAT will illuminate the opportunities presented by new Logistics 4.0 concepts while highlighting the latest best-practice solutions.

In September 2017, the German engineering research industry association VDMA increased its growth forecast for the current year for German robotics and automation from seven to eleven percent.

Fraunhofer demonstrates lightweight robot that can harvest cucumbers

Progress in the field of robotic agricultural technology continues apace as German research institute Fraunhofer demonstrates what it says is a lightweight robot that can harvest cucumbers. 

Fraunhofer developed the robot as part of the European Union’s Catch project, which is aimed at developing robotic solutions for agriculture, especially cucumber-picking.

South Korean government to expand robotics and automation sector to $6 billion

The South Korean government has decided to invest significant resources into expanding the country’s production of industrial robotics and automation systems so that it’s worth $6.15 billion by 2022.

This is according to BusinessKorea.com, which says the plan is intended to increase the number of small and mid-size robot makers with sales of more than $46 million to 25.

Siemens extends digital industrial network

Siemens has set up 20 centers for digital customer applications in the industrial sector. Each of these MindSphere Application Centers for digital offerings from Siemens spans multiple locations in different countries and specializes in a particular industry in which Siemens is active.

Today, around 900 software developers, data specialists and engineers are already working together with Siemens customers at these centers to develop digital innovations for data analysis and machine learning.

These new solutions are being developed on MindSphere, Siemens’ open, cloud-based operating system for the Internet of Things (IoT). To be close to its customers, the company has distributed its 20 centers across around 50 locations in 17 countries worldwide.
