Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

April 1, 2018 by Sam Francis

Android apocalypse
Do androids walk among us today? Do we know? Do the androids know they are androids? If they look like us, live like us, and are made of flesh and bone just like humans, how can we tell them apart from us?

We’re all gonna die. That’s a fact. But some of us refuse to accept it. From Dr James Bedford, who became the first person to be cryogenically frozen in 1967, to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, who also want to be cryogenically frozen upon their passing through this world onto the next, there are many famous and non-famous people who simply refuse to accept that death is the end of their life.

For an increasing number of people, leaving a last will and testament, or a video, or a message stored with a company like Heavenote, is simply not enough. They don’t want to leave anything, least of all life itself. They want to cling on, no matter how tenuous their connection.

And who can blame them? Nobody wants to die. It’s this primaeval drive to avoid death that, arguably, gave rise to some of the world’s largest religions. Christianity and Islam both offer clearly articulated visions of life after death, although Judaism is less clear about what lies beyond this “mortal coil”, as William Shakespeare called it.  [Read more…] about Is this the real life? Roam Robotics launches ‘lightweight’, AI-powered exoskeleton for skiers

March 29, 2018 by Sam Francis

roam robotics exoskeleton

Startup company Roam Robotics is launching its first product – a mobile exoskeleton that it says will help to improve endurance, safety, and experience for skiers and snowboarders. (See video below.)

The device will target the 16 million US adults currently engaged in snow sports, inclusive of the millions of adults age 45 and older that will benefit the most from the support provided by this product, especially those with knee or muscle fatigue issues.

Roam’s device promises to extend your ski day, access longer challenging terrain, make stronger turns, or simply enjoy the sport without the pain – “all the while keeping your knees safer”, says the company.  [Read more…] about Roam Robotics launches ‘lightweight’, AI-powered exoskeleton for skiers

How cities innovate through robotics

March 29, 2018 by Anna

Frankfurt_Skyline

How can robots provide services for cities and their inhabitants? What are the benefits of using robots for the inspection and maintenance of urban infrastructures?

A new video created by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya shows how ECHORD++ is encouraging cities to innovate through robotics, especially in the field of sewer inspection.

The video shows the concept of the ECHORD++ Public end-user Driven Technological Innovation (PDTI) scheme, which we offers R&D consortia the possibility to develop robotic technology according to the needs of public bodies.

Two application areas have been identified: Healthcare and Urban Robotics.

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) used in logistics applications are forecast to enjoy massive growth in the next five years and grow ten-fold to exceed $3bn in 2022, according to a new report from Interact Analysis.

Despite the market being worth just $300m in 2017, the report forecasts that more than 400,000 mobile robots will be installed by the end of 2022.

Whilst AGVs have long been used in manufacturing environments to lower costs and improve efficiencies, logistics and fulfilment centers are a relatively new opportunity.

Ghost in the Shell: Manga movie magnificence

March 26, 2018 by David Edwards

ghost in the shell shot smaller

Even though I’m not all that familiar with “manga” comic culture, I’ve seen some manga movies and have heard of Ghost in the Shell.

Manga originated in Japan as far back as the late-19th century, but with their arrival on television, truly awesome animated cartoons have captivated new generations of fans from around the 1980s onwards.

Ghost in the Shell was originally known as Mobile Armored Riot Police and was a TV series in the very early 1990s. It became a worldwide media franchise, and now, we have this film starring Scarlett Johansson.  [Read more…] about Ghost in the Shell: Manga movie magnificence

Interview: A new type of networking that is claimed to be faster and more reliable

March 21, 2018 by Abdul Montaqim

rajant kinetic mesh

In this exclusive interview, Todd Rigby of Rajant talks about a new type of networking technology that he claims is faster and more reliable

A growing number of factories, warehouses and other industrial facilities are installing computer networks in order to make the most of the opportunities offered by the internet of things.

Typically, sensors are connected to traditional machinery, and then those sensors are connected to what are referred to as “gateway” devices, which are like routers.

This gateway can send the data collected and sent to it by the sensor either to a computer on-site or in the cloud through an internet connection.  [Read more…] about Interview: A new type of networking that is claimed to be faster and more reliable
