NXP and Hitachi team up on V2X for autonomous driving

September 26, 2018 by Anna

NXP Semiconductors N.V., the world’s largest supplier of automotive semiconductors, and Hitachi Solutions, Ltd., a  V2X software platforms specialist, have announced a partnership to develop a new V2X solution targeted at the Japanese market.

V2X technology allows vehicles to “see” around corners and communicate with other cars and infrastructure. It is instrumental in safety critical applications such as platooning and emergency braking and delivers low latency for real-time communication.

The technology also operates in a range that exceeds one mile, even in areas where cellular network connections are not available.

ATS and Bruce Power open advanced automation testing lab

September 17, 2018 by Anna

ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. and Bruce Power held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Major Component Replacement (MCR) Integration testing facility on the ATS Cambridge campus, Ontario, Canada.

Bruce Power is a Canadian private nuclear power generator company. ATS plays a key role in supporting Bruce Power’s MCR program by designing and supplying all of the automation equipment required to remove the irradiated reactor components including the fuel channels, calandria tubes and calandria tube inserts.

There are multiple systems required to remove the components; all are highly automated and controlled remotely. This equipment has been designed to maximise safety during the removal process while optimising operational resources.

ThyssenKrupp agrees big contract to maintain automated movement at Stockholm’s spectacular metro stations

September 11, 2018 by Sam Francis

People using escalator near platform of the underground metro or tunnelbana central station T-Centralen

Elevators, escalators and moving walkways are so ubiquitous in urban environments – at metro stations, airports and other places – that most people probably hardly notice them and perhaps take them for granted.

Not everyone, however: some of us still actually feel a sense of enjoyment at having their strolls through transport hubs aided by these automated systems, even if it’s part of a daily commute to work.

It’s probably fair to say, however, that these automation systems are less complex than ones which involve movement in less straightforward, distraction-filled environments – like, say, those involving an autonomous car.  [Read more…] about ThyssenKrupp agrees big contract to maintain automated movement at Stockholm’s spectacular metro stations

Autonomous vehicle Olli goes to university

August 23, 2018 by Anna

Local Motors by LM Industries, known for 3D-Printed mobility solutions, has launched operations of Olli at the University at Buffalo, USA. Olli is the world’s first co-created, self-driving, electric vehicle.

The University at Buffalo will use Olli for autonomous vehicle education and mapping while also testing the shuttles for campus transportation.

The project, which is being co-managed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the New York State Department of Transportation, supports Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s clean energy goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030.

If you are an activity enthusiast who likes to take photos, then you know what a GoPro is. This small action camera has revolutionized how people can document their activities and adventures. It is very small compared to other cameras, waterproof, and virtually indestructible.

Although earlier GoPro versions were initially designed to take HD videos, its capability to take good quality photos have also improved over its development of later versions.

Oftentimes, it is better to use it for what it is meant for – taking “action” videos. Sometimes though, ‘action’ is not fast-paced.  [Read more…] about 4 Tips for Awesome GoPro Time Lapse Videos

In the latest issue of Sensor Readings magazine, we feature the latest and most advanced technologies for what’s being called “precision agriculture”.

Farming is said to have started around 15,000 years ago and provided the foundation on which human civilizations were built.

As recently as 50 to 100 years ago, most modern nation-states were agrarian, generating the majority of their gross domestic product from the agricultural sector.  [Read more…] about Farming lands in the robotic age while humanoid robot makers adopt 3D technology

Arm and Samsung Foundry ‘push the possibilities’ of semiconductor manufacturing

July 31, 2018 by Mark Allinson

Arm and Samsung Foundry say they are “pushing the possibilities” of semiconductor manufacturing with industry’s first embedded magnetoresistive random-access memory compiler and new physical IP offerings on advanced process nodes including 7nm and 5nm.

What researchers have predicted for several years is now a reality – the end of Moore’s Law is approaching and will impact performance power and area (PPA) across all computing applications.

This includes embedded products used throughout consumer and industrial markets requiring reliable, yet low-power, complex-memory systems to support a spectrum of applications but are limited by the speed, power, and scalability offered by non-volatile mainstream memory options, such as eFlash.  [Read more…] about Arm and Samsung Foundry ‘push the possibilities’ of semiconductor manufacturing
