Ainos unveils ‘AI nose’ for robotics

January 13, 2025 by David Edwards

Ainos, a developer of technology which can “digitize scent”, has unveiled its “revolutionary AI Nose for robotics” application and invites robotics companies worldwide to join Ainos Alliance.

The company says this technology aims to equip robots with the ability to “smell”, filling a long-standing gap in sensory capabilities.

Powered by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors, AI Nose redefines how robots interact with the world, enabling transformative applications across industrial, healthcare, and everyday environments. Robots are forever: How a robot diamond cutter could change a market already disrupted by lab-grown diamonds

January 3, 2025 by David Edwards

About six years ago, the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Diamonds, in Antwerp, Belgium, demonstrated a highly sophisticated robotic system that can automatically cut or polish diamonds in a fraction of the time it takes the most experienced human diamond cutter to do it by hand – “10 to 20 times faster”, according to its makers.

Called the “Fenix” robot, the system is incredibly well designed and it’s no surprise that it generated a lot of interest. So much so that a company called HS Technology, based in the United States, ended up acquiring the entire organisation – it bought the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Diamonds.

Not much was heard about Fenix after that, but the latest is that HD Blueprint, a company specialising in the development of diamond cutting and polishing technologies, now owns the company and machine. Can Adaptive Headlights Make Driving Safer?

December 18, 2024 by David Edwards

In February 2022, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ruled that automobile makers could finally install adaptive driving beam headlight systems (ADB) on their new vehicles to make driving at night and in low visibility safer for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, domestic and wild animals, and others.

This change to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) occurred after federal agencies received complaints from manufacturers and consumers about the lack of modern vehicle lighting and safety technologies to match other countries that had adopted these standards decades ago. Read on to learn more about the impact of these headlights on road safety… [Read more…] about Can Adaptive Headlights Make Driving Safer?

PCBWay launches mechanical and electronics design competitions

November 26, 2024 by Mark Allinson

PCBWay launches 7th electronics project design contest

Some people believe that the printed circuit board, or PCB, is one of the most important inventions – if not the most important invention – ever.

The man credited with the invention of the first PCB is Paul Eisler, who is said to have sold the rights for £1 – that’s one English pound – at the end of the 1930s.

Eisler did negotiate a minority stake in a company called Technograph through the sale, but if he had negotiated a single penny for every PCB sold, it probably would have generated more money for a single product in history. PCBWay now offers multi-colored printed circuit boards

November 26, 2024 by David Edwards

PCBWay now offers designers the chance to print any color image on the PCB they design

Printed circuit boards are often overlooked by the very consumers they work so hard to serve, and that’s fine because they are not meant to stand out – in fact, they are usually hidden away inside the device somewhere. PCBs provide essential functionality to the device they are embedded into. Therefore, they tend to be whatever colors the PCB manufacturer offers.

And until now, the overwhelming majority of PCBs have been green in colour. That is because of the solder mask – almost every manufacturer uses the green standard solder mask.

The main reason is that green is thought to be be the most functional color: you can have white text on it and it will show up well, while still protecting the circuits underneath.
