STMicroelectronics’ chips power robotic lawnmowers from Segway

April 4, 2025 by David Edwards

STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor company, has collaborated with Segway to equip its latest range of robotic lawnmowers with precision positioning and extended satellite-signal coverage bringing their operational efficiency and safety to the next level.

Reliable and precise satellite navigation is crucial for boundary-wire-free robotic lawnmowers to be able to autonomously navigate and operate safely. Adjacent tall buildings or trees can impact satellite reception.

To be able to operate safely at the edge of stairs or steep slopes, satellite signal coverage cannot be spotty and must be guaranteed. [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics’ chips power robotic lawnmowers from Segway

STMicroelectronics teams up with REV Robotics’ battlebot

December 28, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Semiconductor company STMicroelectronics is contributing multiple STM32 microcontrollers (MCUs) to REV Robotics’ “Switchback” battlebot.

The 250-pound battlebot, which uses a dual-motor drum spinner mounted on a fully-ambidextrous arm, is designed for durability and serviceability – as well as to win robot battles by hitting opponent robots really, really hard, and breaking them apart with the drum spinner.

The Switchback battlebot, premiering in battle on the Discovery Channel on January 6th, 2022 and on display in ST’s private suite at CES 2022, uses five heavy-duty electronic speed controllers with open-source firmware, implemented with STM32 MCUs. STMicroelectronics unveils new vibration-monitoring solution for industrial applications

April 13, 2020 by David Edwards

STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor manufacturer, has launched a new vibration-sensing solution optimized to enable smart maintenance of factory equipment.

ST’s IIS3DWB vibration sensor and supporting STEVAL-STWINKT1 multi-sensor evaluation kit accelerate development of condition-monitoring systems that boost productivity by inferring equipment maintenance needs.

Analyzing the sensed vibration data locally or in the cloud helps owners create strategies that maximize uptime, minimize servicing costs, and avoid emergency repairs. [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics unveils new vibration-monitoring solution for industrial applications

STMicroelectronics unveils new motion sensor with integrated machine learning

February 12, 2019 by David Edwards

stmicroelectronics motion sensor

STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor company, has integrated machine-learning technology into its advanced inertial sensors to improve activity-tracking performance and battery life in mobiles and wearables.

The LSM6DSOX iNEMO sensor contains a machine-learning core to classify motion data based on known patterns.

Relieving this first stage of activity tracking from the main processor saves energy and accelerates motion-based apps such as fitness logging, wellness monitoring, personal navigation, and fall detection.  [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics unveils new motion sensor with integrated machine learning

STMicroelectronics launches advanced image sensors for automotive safety systems

December 3, 2018 by Sam Francis

stmicroelectronics automotive solutions

Semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics has unveiled two new automotive global shutter image sensors, the VG5661 and VG5761, featured for driver monitoring.

Both were demonstrated with automotive software innovator Jungo’s driver-monitoring solution CoDriver, at the recent AutoSens Imaging conference and at Electronica 2018.

These advanced image sensors enhance monitoring of vehicle occupants by capturing the scene as illuminated from the camera, eliminating unpredictable external effects such as sunlight or street lighting.  [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics launches advanced image sensors for automotive safety systems

STMicroelectronics releases ‘always-on’ inertial measurement unit

October 29, 2018 by David Edwards

stmicroelectronics factory

STMicroelectronics has launched what it describes as an “always-on” inertial measurement unit which “improves accuracy and optimizes system power”.

The LSM6DSO iNEMO Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) from STMicroelectronics is an always-on 3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope system-in-package that is, by itself, extremely power efficient and accurate.

At the same time, the IMU makes the entire embedded system around it more power efficient, too.  [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics releases ‘always-on’ inertial measurement unit

STMicroelectronics releases ‘super-high-resolution’ motion-tracking sensor for automotive applications

July 13, 2018 by Sam Francis

stmicroelectronics ASM330LHH copy

STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor company, has introduced the automotive-grade ASM330LHH six-axis inertial sensor for “super-high-resolution motion tracking in advanced vehicle navigation and telematics applications”.

STMicroelectronics says the sensor is designed to serve demands for continuous, accurate vehicle location to support automated services, and “lets advanced dead-reckoning algorithms calculate precise position from sensor data if satellite signals are blocked”.

This often happens in urban canyons, tunnels, covered roadways, parking garages, or dense forests, says STMicroelectronics, adding that its advanced, low-noise, temperature-stable design enables dependable telematics services such as e-tolling, tele-diagnostics, and e-Call assistance.  [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics releases ‘super-high-resolution’ motion-tracking sensor for automotive applications
