Physical AI’s looming data rights battle: Interview with Kate Shen of Anaxi Labs

As artificial intelligence continues its rapid expansion into the physical world, much of the industry’s attention has focused on increasingly capable robots, larger AI models, and the vast datasets required to train them.

But a growing number of observers are asking a different question: who owns the data that makes physical AI possible, and who should benefit from it?

Kate Shen, co-founder of Anaxi Labs, is among those pushing the debate into the spotlight. Her company is developing infrastructure for what it describes as a global AI and robotics data supply chain, with a particular emphasis on worker consent, data ownership, compensation, and regulatory compliance. What makes robots feel alive? Human-robot interaction expert Sarah Sebo explains

As robots become more expressive and socially capable, the line between machines and living characters is starting to blur. From Disney’s lifelike Olaf robot (main image) to interactive droids inspired by Star Wars, recent developments highlight how far robotics has come in replicating human-like behavior and emotion.

But what actually makes a robot feel “alive” – and why do some machines feel natural while others fall into the so-called “uncanny valley”?

Humanoid robots are moving steadily from laboratories and research demos toward commercial deployment. Robotics survey highlights autonomy, digital twins, humanoids and ethics as key 2025 trends

A new survey of more than 200 robotics product developers and industrial designers suggests the industry is at a turning point, with advances in autonomy, digital twins and humanoid robots balanced against persistent challenges around cost, safety and ethics.

The study, published by design firm StudioRed, found that robotics development is currently most concentrated in consumer electronics (55.7 percent), manufacturing (52.7 percent) and biotech (51.7 percent).
