Software is ‘the biggest bottleneck to robotics innovation’, says BlackBerry QNX report

June 2, 2026 by Sam Francis

QNX, a division of BlackBerry, has released a new research study, the Inside the Robot: Architecture Benchmark Report, examining how robotics development is changing as systems become more software‑driven, AI‑enabled, and increasingly deployed alongside humans at work and in daily life.

Based on a survey of 1,000 developers from around the world, the research reveals the most significant inhibitors to progress, the gap between system ambitions and current capabilities, and developers’ views on the industry’s future.

A new episode of QNX’s Code the Future podcast featuring Omdia chief analyst Lian Jye Su explores the themes and results in more detail. [Read more…] about Software is ‘the biggest bottleneck to robotics innovation’, says BlackBerry QNX report

SGS awards Dobot robotics ISO 10218 cybersecurity certification

May 8, 2026 by David Edwards

SGS has successfully partnered with Dobot, a developer of collaborative robotics, to verify that its CR 30H Series meets the cybersecurity-related safety requirements of ISO 10218-1:2025, the latest international standard for industrial robot safety.

This verification demonstrates that the CR 30H Series aligns with international expectations for secure-by-design robotics, strengthening its readiness for high-end industrial manufacturing applications and global market access.

In February 2026, SGS awarded Dobot a Verification of Conformity (VoC), confirming full compliance with all cybersecurity elements of ISO 10218-1:2025. [Read more…] about SGS awards Dobot robotics ISO 10218 cybersecurity certification

AI Safety in Robotics: Preventing ‘Unpredictable’ Robot Behavior

January 6, 2026 by Sam Francis

In robotics, the phrase “unpredictable behavior” is often used to describe everything from a slightly unstable grasp to a catastrophic navigation failure.

But from a safety engineering perspective, unpredictability is not a mystery – it is the natural result of uncertainty, complex environments, and learning-based decision-making interacting with physical systems.

AI increases capability: robots can recognize objects, adapt to changing layouts, and work alongside humans. But AI can also introduce new failure modes. Machine-learned perception may misclassify obstacles. [Read more…] about AI Safety in Robotics: Preventing ‘Unpredictable’ Robot Behavior

International Robot Safety Conference to discuss ‘most important standard in robot safety’

September 17, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Companies deploying robots can get clear guidance on how to keep human workers safe at the International Robot Safety Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 1-3.

Hosted by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), which develops robotic standards in the US, the conference will feature revisions to the industrial robot flagship standard – ISO 10218 – along with talks describing technologies and best practices around risk assessment, regulatory compliance, mobile and collaborative robotics, and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI).

Carole Franklin, director of standards development, robotics, A3, says: “The need for comprehensive robot safety knowledge couldn’t be more critical. [Read more…] about International Robot Safety Conference to discuss ‘most important standard in robot safety’
