NXP teams up with Hawkeye in Chinese automotive radar market

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has announced a new strategic collaboration and investment agreement with Hawkeye Technology Co., Ltd, a company at the forefront of the Chinese automotive radar sector.

Hawkeye will bring its 77GHz expertise, a team of engineers and a lab complex within Southeast University in Nanjing, China.

Together, the two companies will form a reference design collaboration that uses top engineering talent at Southeast University and NXP’s longstanding radar expertise, to create NXP-based reference designs for the Chinese automotive market.

Infineon ‘outgrowing all other leading suppliers of automotive semiconductors’ in Japan

Infineon is outgrowing all other leading suppliers of automotive semiconductors in Japan, according to new research by Strategy Analytics.

Infineon says this shows “strong growth in a strategically important market”.

ADAS: Top 40 advanced driver assistance systems companies

The term “advanced driver assistance systems”, or ADAS, refers to a collection of automotive electronics technologies which are designed to enable vehicles to operate autonomously in certain situations.

The market for ADAS is forecast to be worth around $70 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research. And although it’s already a huge market, a lot of the activity now is with the future in mind, a future in which many believe autonomous and electric cars will dominate.

Denso to Invest $1.6 bn in automotive electrification

Denso is to invest approximately 180 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) over three years – from FY2018 to late FY2020 – to support development and production of electrified automotive products, systems and technologies.

To accelerate business execution around electrification, Denso is establishing the Electrification Innovation Center at its plant in Anjo, Aichi, Japan, in May 2020.

The centre will conduct advanced R&D, develop and test prototypes, and launch mass produce newly developed automotive electrification products, systems and technologies.

Nidec to buy Omron’s automotive business for $890 million

Industrial components giant Nidec has agreed to acquire Omron’s automotive business, formally called “Omron Automotive Electronics”.

The two companies do not appear to have released the financial details of the agreement, but Nikkei is reporting that Nidec will pay $890 million for the company.

Nidec Corporation is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of industrial components, with annual revenues typically in the region of $11 billion.

Honda begins operation at new automobile production plant in Brazil

Honda Automoveis do Brasil, the Honda subsidiary in Brazil, has started operation at its new automobile plant in the city of Itirapina in the state of São Paulo.

Honda had last year announced a plan to restructure its automobile production operations to strengthen the foundation of its automobile business.

Denso invests $5 million in Airbiquity connected vehicle technology

Denso has taken a $5 million stake in Seattle-based Airbiquity, a connected vehicle services company and a pioneer in the development of automotive telematics technology.

The investment will accelerate the development of over-the-air (OTA) systems for wirelessly updating automotive software from a remote location.

OTA systems have been increasingly commercialised to update the software of multimedia products, such as car navigation systems. This is critical for automakers as the industry quickly moves toward electrification and autonomous vehicles.

Hyundai develops smartphone-based digital car-key

Hyundai Motor Group has developed a ‘Digital Key’, which allows users to unlock and start their Hyundai vehicle via their smartphone.

Replacing a traditional physical key, the new Digital Key can be downloaded via an app and used by up to four authorised people.

The Digital Key can be downloaded via a cell phone application and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology detects the presence of an authorised Digital Key-enabled cellphone in close proximity to the vehicle door.

Nissan and Docomo test Invisible-to Visible technology using 5G in a moving vehicle

Nissan and NTT Docomo are putting Nissan’s Invisible-to-Visible technology through its field test in a moving vehicle, using Docomo’s fifth-generation mobile communications connectivity.

The technology, first revealed at the CES trade show in Las Vegas in January, is being tested at Grandrive, Nissan’s proving ground in Yokosuka, Japan.

Invisible-to-Visible, or I2V, is a future Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology that merges the real and virtual worlds.
