Australia’s ‘first’ on-demand, driverless car arrives in Perth, built with Navya

September 12, 2018 by Mai Tao

RAC intellicar 1 copy

The Western Australian city of Perth is now home to one of the world’s first driverless, on-demand vehicles, after the official unveiling of the RAC Intellicar yesterday.

RAC is an insurance and breakdown recovery service in Australia. It previously showcased ideas for a driverless minibus called an Intellibus, citing David Hasselhoff and Batman as influences.

Designed as a shared mobility service, the RAC Intellicar will become the newest addition to RAC’s automated vehicle program, supported by the Western Australian Government and vehicle manufacturer, Navya.

RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew says the arrival of the prototype vehicle was a significant transportation milestone for both Western Australia and Australia.  [Read more…] about Australia’s ‘first’ on-demand, driverless car arrives in Perth, built with Navya

Top 25 autonomous shuttle manufacturers in 2025

April 12, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Although the autonomous shuttle industry has made notable technological strides in recent years, the rollout of these vehicles remains largely restricted to controlled environments such as airports, university campuses, large industrial parks, and gated communities.

These closed-loop settings reduce the complexity of real-world driving and offer safer testbeds for autonomy.

Some autonomous shuttles are being piloted on public roads, but only under strict regulatory conditions imposed by local or national governments. These operations typically require trained safety drivers on board, geo-fencing, and constant remote monitoring. [Read more…] about Top 25 autonomous shuttle manufacturers in 2025

Autonomous trucks make the ‘most compelling case’ for automation in commercial vehicles, says report

September 5, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Autonomous trucks make “the most compelling case for automation in commercial vehicles”, according to a new report.

The new IDTechEx study, Heavy-Duty Autonomous Vehicles 2023-2043: Trucks, Buses & Roboshuttles, has found significant activity in the autonomous heavy-duty and commercial vehicle space.

Today, there are hundreds of vehicles around the globe in various stages of trialing, piloting, and even some companies teetering on the precipice of fully unmanned commercial deployment. Each industry has unique strengths and challenges, here are some key findings from the report. AECOM to partner with MnDOT and the City of White Bear Lake on automated shuttle pilot

August 8, 2022 by Mark Allinson

AECOM, an infrastructure consulting firm, is partnering with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and White Bear Lake on the launch of an automated shuttle pilot within the city.

The shuttle, which has been named “Bear Tracks”, will run for one year on a 1.5-mile route and be free to use, connecting area residents to several community facilities and businesses.

The project will incorporate key elements of MnDOT’s Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) Strategic Plan, including enhanced mobility for persons with disabilities, better travel options for elderly communities, and more public awareness of automated vehicle technologies. The awful coronavirus pandemic has changed many people’s lives forever. Many have lost loved ones and many more have suffered illness and inconvenience to their lives and livelihoods.

For businesses in many sectors, it has been extremely difficult to keep going through lockdowns which reduced their income to zero or thereabouts. And despite previously unimaginable levels of government support, they were forced to wind down, perhaps to fight another day sometime in the future. Peachtree Corners partners with T-Mobile to launch Beep autonomous shuttle fleet

October 11, 2021 by David Edwards

Peachtree Corners – a tiny city in Georgia, US – is partnering with T- Mobile to launch a fleet of Beep autonomous shuttles, as well as cellular vehicle-to-everything, or C-V2X.

The advanced autonomous service has been named “PAUL” – short for Piloting Autonomous Use Locally. Peachtree Corners has dubbed an area of the city “Silicon Orchard”.

Peachtree Corners says PAUL delivers “unprecedented safety” through Beep Command Center (BCC) capabilities with continuous human monitoring. [Read more…] about Peachtree Corners partners with T-Mobile to launch Beep autonomous shuttle fleet

Motional and Via partner to launch platform for public, on-demand shared robotaxi rides

November 5, 2020 by David Edwards

Motional, a driverless technology developer, and Via, a public mobility solutions provider, have agreed a partnership that they say will “serve as a blueprint for the future of on-demand, shared robotaxis”.

Motional and Via seek to use learnings from the partnership to inform how driverless vehicles can be integrated into mass transit networks, and optimized for pooled rides.

The partnership’s first service – shared robotaxi rides, available to the public – is expected to launch in one of Motional’s existing US markets in the first half of 2021. The initial launch market will be announced at a later date. [Read more…] about Motional and Via partner to launch platform for public, on-demand shared robotaxi rides

Top 25 autonomous shuttle manufacturers

October 15, 2020 by Sam Francis

Autonomous vehicles have become an unsettling reality. Unsettling for some who can’t get used to the idea of cars driving themselves – too spooky, like ghosts living and driving among us.

While those feelings of apprehension may prevent driverless cars taking to public roads for many years, manufacturers of autonomous shuttles are already doing a brisk trade.

Airports, for example, have been among the most enthusiastic customers for driverless shuttles that can transport passengers between the terminal and plane. In the past, airports provided driverless transport available on rails, which obviously requires greater investment in infrastructure. [Read more…] about Top 25 autonomous shuttle manufacturers
