‘World’s first 3D printed fiber reinforced polymer footbridge paves way for circular composites’, say designers

The world’s first lightweight 3D printed fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) footbridge will be installed at Kralingse Bos park – the green heart of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.

Its designers say the construction will herald the transition towards “the next generation of bridges, offering high performance with extreme versatility, circularity and sustainability”.

Science and technology company DSM and the City of Rotterdam are to collaborate in the designing and building of the new “circular composite footbridge” – “circular” usually refers to recycled or recyclable. Students build robotic garbage-sorting system using B&R technology

A group of students have built a robotic garbage-sorting system using B&R technology.

The 13 students were given three days to build a machine that uses robots to sort garbage at the international Smart Green Island Makeathon engineering competition.

Austrian automation specialist B&R supported an interdisciplinary team of students from Brno University of Technology, the Kempten University of Applied Sciences, the Technical University of Ostrava, the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Showcasing the future of nonwoven materials

Visitors and exhibitors will gather at Index 20, the world’s leading nonwovens exhibition, in Geneva from 31st March to 3rd April 2020, to participate in the industry’s largest platform for cutting-edge nonwoven technologies.

Non-woven fabric is a fabric-like material made from staple fibre and long fibres, bonded together by chemical, mechanical, heat or solvent treatment. The term is used in the textile manufacturing industry to denote fabrics, such as felt, which are neither woven nor knitted. The applications of nonwovens are many and varied, and include many in the automotive industry.

Over the course of four days of the Index event, more than 13,500 visitors and over 750 exhibitors representing around 100 countries will gather to meet like-minded professionals as well as take part in industry workshops, seminars, and networking events. Automotive and industrial companies ‘could unlock billions in revenue’ through new growth strategies

Accenture using a “new way” of measuring corporate competitiveness

Industrial companies, such as automotive manufacturers, could unlock billions of dollars in revenue by adopting a more “holistic strategy”, according to a new report by Accenture.

The business management consultant conducted a survey into competitiveness in industry and found that the best approach is one that places equal emphasis on growth, profitability, sustainability and trust.

This “inter-dependent” strategy “yields massive growth potential”, says Accenture, which bases its conclusions on analysis of 47 automotive and industrial companies’ performances.
