Sumitomo and Dexterity establish joint venture in Japan

Sumitomo, one of the world’s largest trading companies, and Dexterity, an AI and robotics company, have created Dexterity-SC Japan, a new joint venture focused on accelerating the adoption of AI-powered intelligent robotic solutions for warehouse, supply chain, logistics, and other labor intensive industrial operations.

Building on a successful distribution agreement between the two companies in 2022, the newly formed Dexterity-SC Japan will sell, market, localize, and provide financing options for AI-powered robotic solutions.

Premier Design + Build breaks ground to expand manufacturing facility for Sumitomo

Premier Design + Build Group has broken ground on a building expansion project for Sumitomo Drive Technologies in Glendale Heights, Illinois.

The work is designed to meet the evolving needs of the client, whose Midwest-manufactured products are in high demand from customers across a range of industries.

The company’s Glendale Heights location is used for light manufacturing of gearmotors, also known as “speed reducers”. Gearmotors are designed to regulate the speed at which motors run to match the speed needed for a customer’s application. Dexterity and Sumitomo partner to bring ‘next generation robotics’ to Japanese warehouses

Dexterity, a provider of robotic solutions for a variety of industries, has agreed a strategic partnership with the Sumitomo Corporation to install 1,500 Dexterity-powered robots in warehouses across Japan.

Sumitomo Corporation, a Japan-based Fortune 500 multinational, signed an exclusive distributorship agreement in Japan with Dexterity to push into the Robots as a Service (RaaS) business in Japanese warehouses.

Sumitomo develops robot that climbs steel walls

Japanese industrial giant Sumitomo Heavy Industries says it has developed a “novel robot capable of traveling over curved steel walls by magnetic adhesion”.

The achievement is part of a robot development project at Sumitomo’s Technology Research Center, aiming to automate various manufacturing tasks at industrial sites. The development was achieved under Challenge Program 1, launched in 2018.

Sumitomo selects Seegrid autonomous mobile robots for material handling

Seegrid, a manufacturer of autonomous mobile robots for material handling, says Sumitomo Drive Technologies has selected Seegrid’s mobile automation solutions for its expanding manufacturing operations.

The power transmission component manufacturer chose Seegrid’s Palion AMR fleet and Fleet Central enterprise software to support autonomous hauling of parts and equipment between its existing 250,000 assembly facility and its new 100,000 square foot warehouse.

Seegrid’s customer portfolio of global brands in logistics, e-commerce, and manufacturing utilize the company’s automation products and services to propel corporate initiatives, reduce lean waste, and build operational resiliency. Isorg and Sumitomo Chemical partner to develop organic photodetectors

Isorg, a developer of organic photodetectors and large-area image sensors, and Sumitomo Chemical, a provider of OPD materials production and other fields, have agreed a partnership to develop new OPD products for use as smartphone fingerprint sensors and hybrid organic CMOS image sensors.

This agreement expands the existing collaboration between Sumitomo Chemical and Isorg that began in 2013.

Isorg will license its technology processes to its OEMs, while Sumitomo Chemical will manufacture the dedicated organic semiconductor material, as well as support Isorg in terms of production technology and marketing. Sumitomo buys stake in 3D-printing firm Sintavia

Sumitomo Corporation, via Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, has invested in Sintavia, LLC , a company with metallic material 3D-printing (additive fabrication) technology.

Research and development of 3D-printing technology has been under way since the 1980s, and this technology has been applied to a variety of uses, especially with resin materials.

This technology has made it possible to manufacture metallic materials into complex configurations unattainable with conventional manufacturing methods.

Sumitomo partners with Lippo on last-mile delivery in Indonesia

Sumitomo Corporation and the Lippo Group have signed a strategic partnership and Sumitomo has completed investment into Red Carpet Logistics (RCL), Lippo’s tech-enabled last-mile delivery operations.

Japan-based Sumitomo now owns a 40% equity stake in RCL. Proceeds from the transaction will go towards accelerating the growth of the company and entering the C2C express delivery market under the new brand “RCL Express”.

Established in 2016, RCL’s operations in Indonesia span 53 hubs, serving 172 cities and covering 2,400 districts across the country’s archipelago.

Cyberdyne and Sumitomo install robot office cleaners

Cyberdyne and Sumitomo Corporation have agreed to work together to automate and streamline office building cleaning, signing a memorandum of understanding on March 26, 2018.

Sumitomo Corporation plans to operate Cyberdyne’s Cleaning Robot CL02 in office buildings owned by subsidiary companies of Sumitomo Corporation.

In 2001, Sumitomo Corporation installed a cleaning robot system at its headquarters in Harumi Triton Square, Tokyo, where it is still in use today.
