Fanuc robots ‘ease pain’ for Takeda Pharmaceutical

February 7, 2025 by Mark Allinson

A collaborative robotic solution from Fanuc and system integrator SKDK is alleviating health and safety issues at a German pharmaceutical manufacturing facility by working collaboratively with human employees to pack and stack packets of tablets onto pallets.

Prior to the cobot’s installation, workers at the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company in Oranienburg, Germany were physically moving loads totalling 5.8 tonnes per shift, resulting in numerous days lost to sickness.

Since the introduction of the Fanuc CR-15iA, productivity has improved considerably, with the cobot working 24/7 while meeting all health and safety requirements. [Read more…] about Fanuc robots ‘ease pain’ for Takeda Pharmaceutical

Yaskawa partners with Astellas Pharma to build ‘innovative’ cell therapy platform combining robotics and pharmaceutical technologies

August 5, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Yaskawa Electric, one of the world’s largest industrial robot manufacturers, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Astellas Pharma to start talks about building what they describe as “an innovative cell therapy platform by combining robotics and pharmaceutical technologies”.

The MOU is a legally non-binding agreement on a partnership between the two companies, and specific discussions will proceed from now on.

Based on this MOU, the two companies aim to jointly build a new cell therapy platform that may potentially seamlessly bridges the initial stage of research in the cell therapy field to its commercialization, enabling high quality manufacturing of cell therapy products as well as shortening the research and development period. New 3D Printer That Creates Custom Prescription Drugs Developed by University College London

January 4, 2023 by Mark Allinson

University College London (UCL) have developed an exciting new 3D printing technique: “volumetric 3D printing” that lets the pharmaceutical industry customize drugs – including shape, size, dosage, and release – according to each patient’s individual needs.

In turn, medical professionals may eventually be able to use 3D printing to “print” prescription drugs for patients in-office in the future. Not only does 3D printing promise to improve personalized medicine, but it’s also set to drastically cut cost and waste in the process. How automation can help fast track a vaccine

June 4, 2020 by David Edwards

When there’s a Covid-19 vaccine, we’ll all want one fast. Here’s how Honeywell says digital tools can help speed up the process…

The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the need to develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.

The typical vaccine development and production process depends on how the vaccine is created, with the manufacturing process taking anywhere from several days to several weeks for a single batch.

As the coronavirus spreads around the world, the urgency of being able to scale up a vaccine is even more critical. [Read more…] about How automation can help fast track a vaccine

Biopharmaceuticals manufacturing: Strict but supple

January 21, 2017 by Mark Allinson

Robert Harrison, pharmaceutical industry manager of industrial software expert Copa-Data, explains how industrial automation solutions could change the face of biopharmaceutical manufacturing in the years to come

Despite producing innovative drugs that save millions of lives, the pharmaceutical sector is one of the most conservative areas of industry. This cautious approach to new technologies is particularly clear in pharma’s less matured subsectors, including biopharmaceuticals.

Biopharmaceuticals represent the fastest growing sector of the pharmaceutical industry, making up about 20 per cent of the market. Annual growth rates of the biopharma subsector are around eight per cent – double that of more traditional pharmaceutical sectors.  [Read more…] about Biopharmaceuticals manufacturing: Strict but supple
