Chinese company developing humanoid robot to give birth: Breakthrough or dystopian nightmare?

August 18, 2025 by Mai Tao

A Chinese technology company has unveiled plans to create the world’s first humanoid robot capable of carrying a pregnancy to full term and giving birth to a human child.

The firm, Kaiwa Technology, led by Dr Zhang Qifeng in Guangzhou, says it intends to launch a working prototype as soon as 2026.

The robot, essentially an artificial womb wrapped in a humanoid form, is being described as a potential lifeline for couples struggling with infertility. But it has also prompted horror and disbelief, with critics calling it “dehumanising” and “a violation of human ethics”. Pushing the boundaries of music: A humanoid robot learns to play the drums

August 13, 2025 by Mai Tao

An innovative project is transforming the relationship between AI, robotics, and creativity. At its core is a system that teaches a humanoid robot to play the drums – not through direct programming, but through a simulated learning process inspired by how musicians practice and improve. (Video on LinkedIn.)

Picture a live concert where, alongside human musicians, a humanoid robot takes its place behind the drum kit. Science fiction? Maybe for now — but it could soon become reality.

At the forefront of this breakthrough is Asad Ali Shahid, researcher at SUPSI (IDSIA USI-SUPSI) and lead researcher on the project Robot Drummer: Learning Rhythmic Skills for Humanoid Drumming, developed in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano. Figure AI shocks the internet by showing its humanoid robot doing laundry like a pro

August 1, 2025 by David Edwards

Figure AI has captivated audiences with a new viral video showing its humanoid robot, Figure 02, performing household laundry tasks with impressive autonomy. (See video below.)

In footage shared by CEO Brett Adcock on X, the robot is seen efficiently grabbing garments from a basket and loading them into a washing machine – marking a notable achievement in embodied household robotics.

While Figure 02 does not yet operate the washer’s controls itself, this milestone demonstrates its ability to handle the physical manipulation of garments – loading and unloading – in a real‑world setting using its Helix Vision‑Language‑Action model.
