GXO signs ‘industry-first’ multi-year agreement with Agility Robotics

July 3, 2024 by David Edwards

GXO Logistics, one of the world’s largest pure-play contract logistics provider, and Agility Robotics, creator of the bipedal Mobile Manipulation Robot (MMR) Digit, have signed a multi-year agreement to begin deploying Digit in GXO’s logistics operations.

This agreement, which follows a proof-of-concept pilot in late 2023, is both the industry’s first formal commercial deployment of humanoid robots and first Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) deployment of humanoid robots.

Adrian Stoch, Chief Automation Officer, GXO, says: “We’re building on the success of last year’s groundbreaking pilot with Agility by deploying fully operational Digit humanoids into a live warehouse environment. Amazon adds two new robots, including one humanoid, to the 750,000 already working in its warehouses

October 18, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Amazon has revealed that it now has over 750,000 robots working collaboratively with employees, taking on highly repetitive tasks and freeing employees up to “better deliver for our customers”.

With all of these efforts under way, Amazon has just launched a new robotic system in time to help fulfill customer orders for holiday shopping this year. Sequoia is the name of this new technology, and it’s now operating at one of the fulfillment centers in Houston, Texas.

By reimagining how the company stores and manages inventory at its sites, Sequoia will help Amazon delight customers with greater speed and increased accuracy for delivery estimates, while also improving employee safety at the company’s facilities. Agility Robotics has unveiled a new bipedal robot named Digit, which adds an upper torso, arms, sensors, and additional computing power to the successful Cassie robot design.

Agility says Digit’s four degree-of-freedom arms greatly extend both the mobility and utility of Digit, as compared to Cassie. The machine could find useful applications in logistics.

Dr Jonathan Hurst, CTO and co-founder of Agility, says: “For us, arms are simultaneously a tool for moving through the world – think getting up after a fall, waving your arms for balance, or pushing open a door – while also being useful for manipulating or carrying objects.”  [Read more…] about Agility Robotics unveils new robot with two arms and two legs
