BMW claims to be ‘first’ global automaker to obtain autonomous driving licence in China

BMW claims to have become the first international automaker to obtain an autonomous driving road test license in China.

The German auto giant says this is “important step” on its path to autonomous driving.

BMW Group officially obtained the Shanghai Intelligent Connected Autonomous Driving Test License, issued by the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Road Test Promotion Team – consisting of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission. Oceaneering develops remote method for underwater ship inspection

Oceaneering International, Inc. (“Oceaneering”) is pleased to announce a remote method for conducting underwater inspection in lieu of drydocking (UWILD) services.

Working with major classification societies, Oceaneering developed a program that provides a safer, faster, and more efficient process for class surveyors to oversee underwater inspections from onshore.

This remote process reduces mobilisation costs and associated risk exposure, while allowing class surveyors to manage multiple remote UWILD surveys, regardless of location.

Genesis Robotics offers smaller radial flux ‘LiveDrive’ actuator

Genesis Robotics and Motion Technologies (Genesis Robotics) is introducing a smaller, 110mm version of the LiveDrive TM actuator. This new, compact radial flux motor was developed to support a wider range of robotic designs.

The “LiveDrive 110” provides comparable high torque-to-weight, safe and precise actuation as the 250mm LiveDrive actuator, but its small size makes the actuator available for more versatile applications within and beyond robotics.

The LiveDrive actuator suite leverages three discoveries that contribute to the proprietary technology: amplified magnetics, structural-magnetic synergy and unusually high thermal conductivity.

Samsung certifies Mentor Tessent tools for 8LPP process

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has certified Mentor‘s Tessent products for Samsung Foundry’s 8-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) process.

These tools provide design and test time improvements for very large designs targeting markets such as mobile communications, high-speed network/server computing, cryptocurrency, and autonomous driving.

Very large designs in today’s leading semiconductor devices can suffer from requiring large compute resources, and pattern-generation times that are too long or are being performed too late in the design flow.

GM breaks ground on $65 million ACDelco and Genuine GM Parts processing facility

General Motors has broken new ground on an all-new $65 million ACDelco and Genuine GM Parts processing center on a vacant 141-acre lot near the intersection of Genesee and Davison roads in the City of Burton, in the US.

The facility is being built within the Customer Care and Aftersales division of GM.

NextDent 5100 wins 3D magazine award

3D Systems has been awarded the 2018 Healthcare Application of the Year by the publication ‘3D Printing Industry’ for its NextDent 5100 digital dentistry solution.

The winners, including individuals and enterprises focused on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, were nominated and voted on by the publication’s readers. For 2018, award nominations increased 35 percent, and voting also surpassed prior years.

“This award recognizes a momentous shift in the market for digital dentistry, as there is a tremendous growth opportunity for dental 3D printing,” said Rik Jacobs, vice president, general manager, dental, 3D Systems.

General public rides in autonomous vehicles

In cooperation with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International and the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA), Perrone Robotics Inc. successfully conducted the first ever publicly-accessible autonomous vehicle demonstration rides in Tampa, Florida.

PRI brought one of their fully autonomous vehicles to the Tampa Selmon Expressway to give rides to the general public over three days in May.

The demonstrations were part of “SAE Demo Day” organized by SAE to let the public experience rides in an autonomous vehicle and to understand their perceptions and attitudes about autonomous driving. Riders were surveyed before taking a ride, and then surveyed immediately afterwards.

Ricardo has commissioned a state-of-the-art £500k Gleason GP300ES Gear Shaping Machine as part of a strategic multi-year investment programme to consolidate Ricardo’s position in transmission design and manufacturing for worldwide premium motorsports and supercar customers.

This highly advanced manufacturing centre incorporates a totally new shaping head featuring a backlash-free direct drive for the cutter spindle.

With the appropriate software, additional generating cutter rotational motion required for helical gears can be superimposed electronically on the spindle rotation, making it suited for the manufacture of some of the most advanced transmissions systems demanded for motorsport and high-performance supercars.

Bossa Nova Robotics raises $29 million in latest funding round

Bossa Nova Robotics, a provider of real-time, on-shelf product data for the global retail industry, has closed a $29 million funding round led by Cota Capital.

With new participation from China Walden Ventures, LG Electronics, and existing investors, this brings Bossa Nova’s total funding to $70 million.

The company says the funding will support the growth in the number of employees by 50 percent and will further its research and development efforts. Siemens acquires Austemper Design Systems to strengthen product lifecycle management offering

Siemens has entered into an agreement to acquire Austin, Texas-based Austemper Design Systems, a startup software company that offers analysis, auto-correction and simulation technology.

This technology allows customers to test and harden integrated circuit designs for functional safety in applications such as automotive, industrial and aerospace systems where functional safety and high reliability are mandatory for compliance to safety standards like ISO 26262.

ICs in these applications require three types of functional safety verification:

  • for systemic faults;
  • malicious faults; and
  • random hardware faults.
