Scientists discover how silkworm moth’s odor detection may improve robotics

Researchers from Japan explore how the domesticated flightless silkworm moth (Bombyx mori), a prominent insect model in olfactory research, uses wing flapping to manipulate airflow, enhancing their ability to detect distant pheromones.

These findings highlight how moths guide pheromones to their odor sensors in antennae, and suggest potential applications for designing advanced robotic systems for odor source localization.

Scientists develop ‘cat’s eye-inspired vision system’ for autonomous robotics

Researchers led by Professor Young Min Song from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) have unveiled a vision system inspired by feline eyes to enhance object detection in various lighting conditions.

Starship and Bolt launch grocery deliveries by robot

Comau has been showcased a new robotic work cell that it says can manoeuvre and machine large parts. The solution is called SmartReach and it was debuted at a recent BI-MU trade show in Italy.

Denso to construct ‘24-hour unmanned’ facility in Japan

Japanese automotive components giant Denso says it will build a new, “24-hour unmanned” facility in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, by expanding the site of its Zenmyo Plant.

Construction will start in the first half of 2025 and will be completed in January 2027, with production slated to start in the first half of 2028. The total investment will be about 69 billion yen, which is about $463 million.

Kuka launches new range of SCARA robots with 60 kg payload

Kuka has launched a new range of SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) robots with payloads of up to 60kg. The company adds that the new robots have “special features” such as their high speed and repeat accuracy.

With the KR SCARA in the now available 20-kg payload class and soon to be released 60-kg payload class, Kuka is further expanding its portfolio of four-axis robots.

Universal Robots increases payload capacity for its cobots

Universal Robots, the collaborative robot company, is increasing the payload capacity on its new-generation, high-payload cobots UR20 and UR30, enabling customers to lift more at no additional cost.

The updates raise the total payload, including end-effector, to 25 and 35 kgs respectively when utilizing the cobot in top lift position. This is especially useful for palletizing applications and solutions.
