Massachusetts awards more than $10 million in grants to sustainable manufacturing ventures

The Healey-Driscoll administration, of Massachusetts, has awarded $10,280,407 in grants to 13 companies to support sustainable alternatives to traditional manufacturing through the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2), a program through MassTech Collaborative’s (MassTech) Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) that bridges the gap between innovation and commercialization by providing capital grants and supporting pioneering projects in emerging industries.

The Administration announced the grants during an event with Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao and MassTech at Clean Crop Technologies in Holyoke, which is receiving a $1.2 million M2I2 grant to validate its innovative technology that removes contaminants from crops using less energy.

Boston University celebrates grand opening of its Robotics & Autonomous Systems Teaching & Innovation Center

An autonomous robot cut the ceremonial ribbon at the grand opening of Boston University’s $8.8 million Robotics & Autonomous Systems Teaching & Innovation Center (RASTIC).

Held March 4th, the grand opening included talks from state, industry and university leadership; facility tours; and 16 student demonstrations of robotic projects, spanning smart cities, medical robotics, drones, autonomous driving, smart home applications, and more.

Continental and Aurora finalize design of ‘world’s first’ scalable autonomous trucking system

Continental and Aurora Innovation announced they have achieved a key development milestone to commercialize autonomous trucks at scale.

The companies have finalized the design and architecture of the future fallback system and hardware of the Aurora Driver – an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Level 4 autonomous driving system – that Continental plans to start production of in 2027.

TXI lends weight to America’s ‘Titanium Economy’

Popularized by the bestselling book of the same name, written by three McKinsey analysts, “The Titanium Economy” refers to “a group of companies (that) could consistently outperform the market, create millions of high-quality American jobs and lead technological innovation while building a more sustainable future”.

Such companies already exist, say the authors. They are part of what they called “the Titanium Economy”, a cohort of industrial technology companies that are “redefining the future of US manufacturing”.

Industry group proposes plan to increase automation in logistics facilities

The warehousing and storage industry faces growing demand to deliver goods across the country as consumers purchase more goods online.

To address the productivity crunch and improve workers’ well-being, policymakers should establish measures to support robotic automation in logistics facilities, according to a new report from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, the leading think tank for science and technology policy.

Think Surgical’s miniature robotic system developed with Sagentia gains FDA clearance

Think Surgical’s Tmini Miniature Robotic System has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Think Surgical chose R&D consultancy Sagentia Innovation, a market-leading advanced surgical robotics developer, to support key aspects of the Tmini system’s development.

The Tmini system includes a wireless robotic handpiece that assists surgeons in performing total knee replacement. Following a CT based three-dimensional surgical plan, the Tmini robotic handpiece automatically compensates for surgeon hand movement to locate bone pins along precisely defined planes.
