Rethink Robotics’ Sawyer bridges workforce gaps at Cox Container

May 18, 2018 by Anna

sawyer

Cox Container, LLC, a plastics blow moulding manufacturer, has deployed Rethink Robotics‘ Sawyer robot at its Troy, Alabama, USA, facility to address challenges associated with labour shortages and offering high quality jobs to its workers.

Cox Container, LLC, currently operates several blow molders, 24 hours per day in its 73,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.

Cox Container accommodates custom orders, so adaptability from both human workers and machines is a critical need as the company shifts between high-volume, low-mix and low-volume, high-mix models.

Boston Dynamics to unleash its terrifying canine robot on the world next year

May 16, 2018 by Sam Francis

boston dynamics spotmini small

Boston Dynamics, maker of the world’s most terrifying robots, is preparing to unleash its nightmare-inducing canine robot onto the world next year.

The company clearly thinks the machine is ready for the market but the question is whether or not the market is ready for the machine.

Boston Dynamics specialises in making humanoid and canine robots. In both instances, the robots it has demonstrated are capable of moving in such a realistic way that some observers have demanded they be kept permanently in labs.  [Read more…] about Boston Dynamics to unleash its terrifying canine robot on the world next year

Top 10 most memorable films and TV shows with robots in them

May 16, 2018 by David Edwards

terminator image small

You probably know the winner without looking – I’ve chosen The Terminator, the 1984 movie when Arnold Schwarzenegger was in his prime and when films still required good stories and plot twists and could not rely entirely on special effects to wow audiences.

There are probably others on the list you can guess, but that is the nature of such collections – most of us can agree on them.

There are probably no surprises, but then surprises are probably overrated, especially in a world where the word “surprise” is often deliberately or unwittingly substituted for “trauma” or “shock” and expected to be laughed off by people who may or may not know the difference.  [Read more…] about Top 10 most memorable films and TV shows with robots in them

festo BionicFlyingFox_1 small]

Festo, a supplier of automation equipment, has unveiled two new lightweight robotic concepts inspired by nature.

The BionicWheelBot and BionicFlyingFox are this year’s creations from the company’s Bionic Learning Network, where Festo’s experts looked at the motion of spiders and bats to navigate complex situations – from crossing rocky terrain to learning efficient flight paths.

BionicWheelBot robot is based on the flic-flac spider, which lives in the Sahara and escapes predators with cartwheels and flips.  [Read more…] about Festo showcases bio-inspired robots including rolling spider and flying ‘fox’ which actually looks more like a bat

MarketNewsUpdates.com news commentary

The robots are coming, whether we are ready or not and the trend is clear: robots will increasingly integrate into our society – at work, at home, in warehouses, hospitals and retail stores, on city streets, industrial parks and the footpaths of college campuses.

As these increasingly versatile machines start to roll out or walk out of the laboratories, the global robotics and automation market is forecasted to grow from $64 billion to $1.2 trillion in the next 10 years.  [Read more…] about The rise of the robot: Investing in disruptive automation

Segway Robotics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Segway-Ninebot Group, concluded what it says was a “successful” Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign this week, having raised $1.1 million in 50 days from 952 backers.

The initial goal of $100,000 was achieved less than 33 minutes after Segway Robotics started its crowdfunding campaign for Loomo, a smart machine that toggles between a mini personal transporter and mobile robot sidekick.

Loomo begins shipping to Indiegogo backers in late May and this will continue through the summer, with hundreds of Loomos to be shipped every week.  [Read more…] about Segway Robotics raises more than $1 million on Indiegogo for new vehicle

Festo credits digitalisation for record growth in 2017

May 11, 2018 by Anna

Festo recorded an increase in sales of over 12% to approximately €3.1 billion for the 2017 financial year. This positive development continued into the first quarter of 2018. The strongest driver of growth was the electronics industry.

With the “digital customer journey”, the company is placing the customers at the focus of its digitalisation strategy and is launching the first digital products on the market this year.

Festo reinforced its technological standing in late 2017 with the appointment to the Management Board of Dr. Frank Melzer, who will further advance the digitalisation of the core business and the future-oriented industries. The global workforce grew to 20,100.

Pushy Pepper robots take over Smithsonian Museum hosting jobs

May 8, 2018 by Mai Tao

smithsonian pepper_in_commons_2

A contingent of pushy Pepper robots – a small humanoid robot produced by SoftBank Robotics – has taken over the Smithsonian Museum’s hosting jobs.

The Pepper robots have already taken up their positions and are all set to meet and greet and be robotically cheerful for visitors to what is perhaps the world’s most famous museum chain.

The innocuous-looking but potentially job-stealing Pepper units were all donated by SoftBank as part of a pilot project. [Read more…] about Pushy Pepper robots take over Smithsonian Museum hosting jobs
