Lumotive launches new LiDAR to enable autonomous vehicles

Lumotive, the Bill Gates-funded startup developing LiDAR systems for autonomous vehicles, has launched a beam-steering technology which it claims will “significantly improve” the performance, reliability and cost of LiDAR systems for the emerging self-driving car industry.

Initially targeting the robo-taxi market, Lumotive’s patented system uses liquid crystal metasurfaces (LCM) and silicon fabrication to achieve “unmatched levels” of manufacturing efficiency while simultaneously delivering unprecedented range, resolution and frame rate.

Semiconductor industry association SEMI has organised a symposium to consider the technology requirements of Europe going forward.

The SEMI Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS Europe), scheduled for 31 March to 2 April 2019 in Milan, Italy will soon host discussions about Europe’s most relevant strategic, economic and social needs.

Siemens tops European patent application rankings

Siemens submitted more patent applications than any other company in Europe in 2018, thus advancing to first place in the European Patent Office’s application rankings.

With 2,493 patent applications, Siemens relegated last year’s leader, Huawei, to second place, followed by Samsung and LG. In 2017, Siemens had taken second place. The last time the company was ranked No. 1 in Europe was in 2011.

More than 25 percent of the patents are in the areas of Industry 4.0 and digitalisation, where Siemens submitted considerably more applications for intellectual property rights than in the prior year.

Genuine Parts Company has agreed to acquire motion control solutions provider Axis New York in a deal done on behalf of its Industrial Parts Group and Motion Industries.

The effective close date is March 1, 2019, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.

Agriculture: Cambridge Consultants launch autonomous robot to monitor farm crops

Technology research company Cambridge Consultants has launched a robot to monitor and manage farm crops.

Cambridge Consultants says the mechatronic farming machine, called “Mamut”, is an autonomous robot that explores crop fields, capturing data on health and yield at the level of individual plants and on a massive scale.

ABB launches environmental monitoring solution for control room operators

ABB is launching a new digital solution to give control room operators insight into their own environmental conditions, with the possibility to adjust them according to their individual preferences.

As part of its unified, cross-industry, digital offering, ABB Ability, the solution adapts to each individual’s needs by measuring factors such as air quality, temperature, lighting environment and humidity.

Operators also receive information on factors such as how long they have been standing or sitting, with recommendations for actions that will increase their well-being.
