Top 10 robotic insects: Can robotic bees save all plant life on Earth?

January 16, 2025 by David Edwards

As someone who eats honey on toast almost every day, I’ve been quite interested over the past few years by stories about the supposed collapse of the global bee population.

Bees not only produce honey, they are, of course, nature’s great pollinators. Although not the only pollinators around, they’re the only ones who produce honey, as far as I know.

So, I thought I’d delve into this topic a little bit, in light of various academic institutions and companies developing tiny flying robots or drones that could potentially do the job of natural pollinators. [Read more…] about Top 10 robotic insects: Can robotic bees save all plant life on Earth?

Autonomous snow-clearing vehicles: Solutions for winter’s challenges

January 6, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Regardless of whether you believe in “global warming” or the various outlandish claims some environmentalists make, me personally, I’ve noticed that, over the course of my lifetime, the weather has become more and more crazy.

I don’t think the mainstream news media covers the subject enough, preferring to cover the never-ending wars that repeatedly flare up here and there with the same kind of regularity that they did in biblical times.

Living in the UK, I’ve noticed that the north of England is often inundated with water because of unexpected and unprecedented flooding, or trashed by gale force winds that tear down fences and gates in the middle of the night, or snow that blankets entire towns and airports.

And yet, the news media – which is mostly based in the south, specifically London – appears to be oblivious to it all, preferring to keep their cameras on the dances of death by the current generation of warlords around the world. RC Mowers’ remote-operated robotic mowers solve City of Vallejo ‘biggest problems’

August 27, 2024 by David Edwards

For the City of Vallejo, California, keeping its maintenance workers safe and its more than 8,000 acres of land protected from potential fire hazards was the catalyst for its decision to add three more RC Mowers remote-controlled robotic mowers to its fleet this mowing season.

Robert Ljuba, the facilities maintenance supervisor for the City of Vallejo Water Department, says: “Our team spends a great deal of our work week clearing the brush and other vegetation that serve as fuel for wildfires.

“Because this brush is usually located on hills and in rough terrain, our crews are often put in harm’s way. As a result, we are constantly evaluating equipment that can help mitigate those risks while doing an effective job at removing fire hazards.” [Read more…] about RC Mowers’ remote-operated robotic mowers solve City of Vallejo ‘biggest problems’

Is washing your car at home more environmentally friendly than taking it to an automated car wash?

August 27, 2024 by David Edwards

Sustainability is becoming an ever-more prominent trend among consumers, who are willing to pay a 9.7 percent premium for greener product alternatives despite the rising cost of living.

Accordingly, car owners are more concerned with finding the most eco-friendly method for washing their vehicles. This concern is well-founded, especially with the EU’s updated Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) highlighting urban wastewater as a significant source of water pollution.

The tightening of these regulations coincides with the alarming scarcity of water resources, pointing out the urgency of reducing water waste. [Read more…] about Is washing your car at home more environmentally friendly than taking it to an automated car wash?
