Skyports receives design approval for first commercial vertiport in the UAE

January 9, 2025 by David Edwards

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has granted technical design approval for the first commercial vertiport in the United Arab Emirates.

This significant milestone enables Skyports Infrastructure to continue with the development of its DXV facility, where commercial air taxi operations are scheduled to begin from 2026.

The Dubai International Vertiport (DXV), named for its location near Dubai International Airport (DXB), is the first facility to receive design approval under the newly established UAE Vertiport Regulations. Is the eVTOL market dead? We take a high-level look

January 2, 2025 by David Edwards

Here at RoboticsAndAutomationNews.com Towers, we love to let readers know about completely new technologies that are opening up entirely new and unpredicted markets – or at least ones we hadn’t thought about here.

I mean, things like the electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) – small, light aircraft about the size of a car designed to carry around four passengers over short distances. eVOTLs have been subject of much hype over the past few years.

We’ve been part of that hype in the sense that we have covered the market extensively even though, strictly speaking, it probably doesn’t come within our subject area of robotics and automation – we have to stretch the meaning somewhat anyway. Downtown Skyport to become new operator for Manhattan Heliport

December 24, 2024 by Anika Haque

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has selected Downtown Skyport as the new operator of the Downtown Manhattan Heliport (DMH) following a Franchise and Concession Review Committee FCRC public hearing approval.

Following a competitive Request for Proposal RFP process, Downtown Skyport will take over management of DMH to continue existing operations and upgrade the City-owned heliport to provide the supporting infrastructure for electric vertical take-off and landing eVTOL aircraft, as well as last-mile maritime freight delivery.

In November 2023, Mayor Adams and NYCEDC announced a new vision of transforming the heliport into a sustainable, multi-modal transportation and logistics hub. [Read more…] about Downtown Skyport to become new operator for Manhattan Heliport

4 Automation Changes to Aircraft We Could See Soon

October 25, 2024 by Mark Allinson

With automation at the forefront of all transportation services, it’s no surprise that many of the most significant changes in aircraft technology are in the world of automation.

While we aren’t likely to see AI pilots in the near future, there are many ways in which automation is being integrated to make flying faster, safer, and smoother.

Let’s examine a few of the ways in which automated changes are likely to impact aircraft in the near future. [Read more…] about 4 Automation Changes to Aircraft We Could See Soon

Honeywell and Odys Aviation partner to develop autonomous aircraft operations in Oman and Pacific

July 26, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Honeywell and Odys Aviation, a developer of advanced hybrid Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft, have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the design of new Ground Control Stations to support the rollout of Odys Aviation’s hybrid VTOL aircraft in the Middle East and Pacific.

Under the terms of the MOU, Honeywell will provide a Ground Control Station for uncrewed aerial system (UAS) operations, supporting operations of Odys Aviation’s uncrewed air vehicle (UAV), Laila. Pilot programs using Laila and the new Ground Control Station are expected to kick off in 2025.

Laila is designed in multiple configurations to deliver cargo. With a 230-mile range it is an ideal aircraft to support pipeline inspections, leak detection, geological surveys, maritime operations and logistics services, including the delivery of time-critical goods. Comau and Leonardo Helicopters design ‘advanced automated inspection’ system for aeronautical structures

February 26, 2024 by David Edwards

The increasing push for faster processes, better control and higher quality in the aerospace industry necessitates a new generation of advanced automation designed to automate complex processes that until a short time ago could only be done manually.

When it comes to testing critical structures such as helicopter blades, for example, the potential benefits of automation increase exponentially, as robotic inspection grants accuracy as well as efficiency.

They also ensure standardization of and full compliance with the testing process by objectively completing each assigned task. [Read more…] about Comau and Leonardo Helicopters design ‘advanced automated inspection’ system for aeronautical structures
