Chalmers University selects Lenovo and Nvidia to build Swedish national supercomputer

Chalmers University of Technology is using Lenovo and Nvidia’s technology infrastructure to power its large-scale computer resource, or supercomputer, Alvis.

The project has seen the delivery and implementation of a clustered computing system for artificial intelligence and machine learning research, in what is Lenovo’s largest high-performance computing cluster for AI and ML in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

FarmWise raises $45 million to expand AI-powered farm equipment

Farm automation startup FarmWise Labs has completed an oversubscribed $45 million Series B funding round, led by leading ag-tech venture firms Fall Line Capital and Middleland Capital, with participation from GV and Taylor Farms, a grower and processor of leafy greens and fresh vegetables.

Existing investors Calibrate Ventures, Playground Global, SVG Ventures and the venture arm of Wilbur Ellis also participated in the round. To date, FarmWise has raised $65 million in equity.

Embark provides Texas law enforcement with autonomous trucks

Embark Trucks, a developer of autonomous technology for the trucking industry, is making progress in its efforts to develop an emergency vehicle interaction capability for Embark-powered autonomous trucks to identify, stop for, and interface with law enforcement vehicles.

Embark is working closely with the Texas Department of Public Safety to train Embark-powered trucks to identify law enforcement vehicles in situations such as traffic stops, and to develop communication protocols and standard operating procedures between autonomous trucks and law enforcement officers.

Financial analyst Cowen teams up with MassRobotics to examine robotics and climate change

Investment research company Cowen and startup incubator MassRobotics announced a groundbreaking research report on the increasing role robotics is playing in helping companies achieve climate goals.

Joe Giordano, CFA, Cowen’s diversified industrials, automation and robotics analyst, led the Ahead Of The Curve Series report, which incorporated a survey from MassRobotics that polled manufacturers and end-users to understand where robotics is positioned within their climate toolkit.

Canadian innovator wins award for robot that does the dirtiest of industrial dirty work

Nicolas Olmedo is on a mission to keep people safe by sending robots where no human should ever have to go: into the murky, muddy sludge of industrial mine tailing ponds and other hazardous terrains that need to be continually monitored.

His ground-breaking work to develop intelligent robots capable of traversing mud, snow, ice or rock using screw-shaped pontoons has earned Olmedo a prestigious award from Mitacs, a national innovation organization that fosters growth by solving business challenges with research solutions from academic institutions.

In recognition of his efforts to advance the robots through his company, Copperstone Technologies, Olmedo – one of three Copperstone co-founders who completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta – was presented the Mitacs Outstanding Entrepreneur Award on June 2 at a ceremony in Montreal, Canada. EV Safe Charge unveils electric vehicle charging robot

EV Safe Charge, a provider of flexible electric vehicle charging technology, has unveiled ZiGGY, its mobile EV charging robot.

ZiGGY will bring EV charging to parking facilities, shopping and entertainment centers, hotels, fleet operators and property owners, providing cost-effective charging, overcoming the limitations of stationary EV chargers without the need for costly electrical infrastructure.

Global spending on semiconductor fabrication equipment expected to reach record $109 billion

Global fab equipment spending for front-end facilities is expected to increase 20 percent year-over-year to an all-time high of $109 billion in 2022, marking a third consecutive year of growth following a 42 percent surge in 2021.

This is according to industry association SEMI, which published the figure in its latest quarterly World Fab Forecast report. Fab equipment investment in 2023 is expected to remain strong.

Miso Robotics expands through partnership with Americana Restaurants

Miso Robotics, specializing in the restaurant industry, is partnering with Americana Restaurants, a food and beverage operator and a master franchisee which works with brands such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Hardee’s, Krispy Kreme, and TGI Friday’s.

The collaboration will begin with a piloted test of Flippy at Americana Restaurants’ flagship Wimpy location in The Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping destinations.

Flippy 2, a robotics solution that can independently do the work of an entire fry station, has shown it can optimize operations in quick-service restaurants and is set for further integration and expansion across other Americana Restaurants locations in the months ahead.
