How to Reduce Any and All Dangerous Driving Habits and Stay Safe

May 2, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Since our adolescence, we have been told the rules and regulations for safe driving. However, for some reason, people continue to test the boundaries.

Whether it is due to laziness, recklessness, or perhaps stress and irritation, dangerous driving habits are really not worth the risk.

That is why it’s important to pay attention to your actions so that you can realize that the habits that you believe are harmless can be detrimental. On that note, here are simple ways to reduce your dangerous driving habits and stay safe.

Time Management

Poor time management is one of the top reasons for road incidents. People who don’t allow enough time to get to their destination end up speeding, ignoring the speed limit, and this type of stress won’t allow you to be aware of your surroundings on the road.

When you are in a rush to get somewhere, you won’t be present. That’s why it’s absolutely crucial that you plan your timing to be safer on the road.

Hands-Free Equipment

Among the main causes of car accidents are texting and driving. Being on your phone for any reason will decrease your reflexes. Talking on the phone takes one hand off the wheel and texting takes your eyes off the wheel.

An accident can take place in a matter of seconds, which is why the safest option is to leave your phone alone. Investing in a hands-free set will allow you to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road at all times.

Follow Traffic Laws and Keep Distance

As mentioned above, ignoring the speed limit and traffic laws is only going to increase the risk of an accident. Make sure you keep an appropriate distance between vehicles and pay attention to the road’s speed limits. Selfish or reckless driving is only going to put yourself and others at risk.

Many transport companies have a greater risk as they are maneuvering heavy machinery on the road; therefore, drivers are putting themselves at even greater risk by not following the traffic laws.

One of the best ways companies can reduce these dangerous driving habits is to look into fleet dash cams as these solutions will help employers keep track of their fleet and driving habits.

This will also result in fewer insurance problems when you can monitor your drivers and ensure that safety comes first which will, in turn, protect your companies’ reputation.

Avoid Distractions

Much like texting and driving, there are other distractions that lead to tremendous repercussions. Drinking coffee and other beverages is known to lower the speed of your reflexes as it takes your hands off the wheel, which should always be at the 10 and 2 positions.

Moreover, music may be necessary for some drivers; however, others tend to be less present when they’re listening to music and it is vital that you are always focused on your surroundings. Take away any distractions when you’re behind the wheel that blurs your judgment.

Be Present

As mentioned above, being present will reduce a lot of dangerous driving habits. It’s important to be aware of the vehicles around you.

Some reckless drivers will try to overtake you and it’s important that you are mindful of other drivers’ intentions.

Some fail to indicate their intentions, so being present is key to staying safe. Avoid letting road rage creep up and let the careless driver pass.

No matter what, it’s always best to avoid the altercation. So, pay attention to what other drivers are trying to do.

Improve Vision

Dangerous driving habits can be as little as being too lazy to wear your glasses and contacts. It can also be simply because you don’t take the time to prioritize car maintenance.

Washing your car regularly so that you can see through the dashboard can mean the difference between life and death.

If your vision is impaired in any way, even something as little as an unclear screen, you are no longer safe on the road and you are putting other people’s lives at risk.

Make sure you can see the road clearly and that your dashboard and mirrors are clean to be able to view your surroundings.

Reading this list, you may have found you obtain one or two of these habits. Luckily, all these dangerous driving habits can easily be rectified.

With better time management, keeping beverages out of your car, and investing in a hands-free set are just a few easy implementations to ensure you’re safe on the road.

Transport businesses and individual drivers can all benefit by introducing safer driving habits on the road.
