What is a Plasma Cutter? And, Why Your Business May Need One

December 12, 2023 by David Edwards

A plasma cutter is a tool that uses a directed stream of hot plasma to cut through various types of conductive metals like steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and more.

Plasma cutters work by creating an electrical arc between a negatively charged electrode in the tip of the torch and the positively charged workpiece.

This arc ionizes gas passing through it, creating a channel of superhot plasma that can melt and cut through metal. [Read more…] about What is a Plasma Cutter? And, Why Your Business May Need One

How to Reduce Chatter in Robotic Milling Applications

October 23, 2023 by David Edwards

Have you optimized the performance of your robotic arm as it performs milling operations? Machining with articulated robot arms is an attractive alternative to machine tools because they offer ease of set-up, repeatability, a large workspace, and versatility.

However, machine tools are as much as 50 times stiffer than robotic arms. This lack of stiffness in robots makes it challenging to produce the desired performance. Minimizing chatter is a frequent concern and should not be overlooked to ensure the right results the first time.

In this article, we explore some best practices for reducing chatter with a focus on the spindle and tooling. [Read more…] about How to Reduce Chatter in Robotic Milling Applications

Piab releases new lightweight bag gripper

October 12, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Piab has released a new lightweight bag gripper which, the company says, “strengthens its grip on the palletizing solutions market”.

Piab says the new gripper, the LBG-50, “easily lifts sacks and bags with weights of up to 50 kg”. As it is a pre-engineered tool, “valuable development time can be saved”.

An unavoidable challenge when defining a new bag gripping system in a palletizing line is to get the exact measurements to align with the conveyor rollers for a smooth lifting and releasing process. This demands time-consuming analysis and design and, later on, even more time for adaptation and adjustments. [Read more…] about Piab releases new lightweight bag gripper
