Hannover Messe: A new software paradigm for industrial hardware

April 26, 2018 by Abdul Montaqim

computer programming code

Within every intelligent machine, such as an industrial robotic arm, there is, of course, software.

The software is what enables it to operate according to its requirements.

And as the machines get more sophisticated, so does the software. [Read more…] about Hannover Messe: A new software paradigm for industrial hardware

Marjorie Prime: Virtual relatives provide comfort from the afterlife

April 8, 2018 by David Edwards

A couple of years ago, a computer game called Pokémon Go!, which could be played on smartphones, became so popular worldwide that it was said to have crashed the Google servers it was running on.

People everywhere were peering into their smartphones – not that they needed any additional encouragement to do that – and seeing the world through their cameras, except the world through the smartphone screen was augmented with images of the little critter from Pokémon Go!.

The game involved finding the small, dinosaur-like critter here, there and everywhere. I don’t know what the prize was for finding them, but it seems millions of people were looking for them worldwide.  [Read more…] about Marjorie Prime: Virtual relatives provide comfort from the afterlife

By Michael Ford, Aegis Software

Industry 4.0 describes both a business model and technology process for factories, to both require and enable them to become super-efficient whilst also being super-flexible.

Traditional approaches to automation in machinery and robotics continue to be successful, but, are mainly focused on specific production operations, leaving critical operational level decision-making on the “to do” list.

Well, if we don’t get to it soon, someone else will do it for us, and it may not be a human.  [Read more…] about Opinion: Putting artificial intelligence to work in industrial operations

Robots are stealing the world’s fish, says World Economic Forum

January 22, 2018 by Sam Francis

fish shoal 1

A third of all fish consumed in the world are already caught illegally, and artificial intelligence and drone technologies are increasingly to blame, according to a report by the World Economic Forum into risks to the global economy.

WEF says that when the automation of illegal fishing is considered, the impact on fish stocks could be “devastating – particularly in international waters where oversight is weaker”.

Countless other areas exist where the same logic might unfold, says WEF, adding that huge short-term incentives might lead to the use of emerging technologies in ways that trigger irreversible long-term damage.  [Read more…] about Robots are stealing the world’s fish, says World Economic Forum
