The US government has taken one of its most significant steps yet to regulate advanced robotics, adding foreign-produced humanoids, quadrupeds and other mobile robots to the Federal Communications Commission‘s “Covered List” of technologies considered to pose an unacceptable risk to national security.
At first glance, the decision appears surprising. The FCC is best known for regulating radio spectrum, mobile phones and telecommunications equipment, not robots.
But modern robots are no longer simply mechanical machines. They are highly connected computers on wheels or legs, equipped with wireless communications, cameras, microphones, cloud connectivity and remote software update capabilities. From the perspective of US regulators, those communications functions place advanced robots firmly within the cybersecurity landscape.
The decision marks another stage in the US government’s widening effort to secure connected technologies that it believes could present supply chain or cybersecurity risks.
Why is the FCC involved?
