8 Smart home technology upgrades that increase the value of your home

April 28, 2021 by Liv Leave a Comment

With each passing year, more and more people decide to invite technology into their homes. Smart locks, security cameras, and voice assistants are only a few examples from the list of technologies that have recently grown in popularity among homeowners.

Adding technology to a home can significantly increase its value. In Sarasota, Florida – which had been trending toward a sellers market – the Covid pandemic stalled the increase in home values.

Homeowners are taking steps to compensate for this – garage door repair in Sarasota, for example – and adding technology is another good way to compensate for this dip in the market.

But even if you aren’t planning to sell your home – especially if you plan to continue living there – adding technology to your home can give you added comfort, safety, and convenience.

Smart locks

A smart lock is a convenient and easy-to-install solution that can provide a great deal of security for your home. Some of the the best smart locks on the market allow you to lock or unlock your door with a voice command or through an app on your phone.

Some of the other features of a smart lock include tamper alarms and e-mail notification to inform you who is coming and going in real time.

Smart video doorbell

Smart doorbells are relatively inexpensive, easy to install, and easy to use. The best smart video doorbells on the market allow you to see who is at your door and communicate with them without needing to open your door (or even go to the door).

Smart doorbells can connect to your phone so that you can see and communicate with the person at your door even if you’re not home.

Security cameras

Next on our list is security cameras, which can be easily installed in your home thanks to the fact that these days you can find them in almost any store that sells electronics.

There are several different types of security cameras, which differ in their size and mounting options. In most cases, people choose to install security cameras near the doors of their homes, as well as inside bedrooms or living rooms.

The images these security cameras record can be stored in the cloud, which means you don’t need a hard drive to store the data.

Smart thermostats

Thermostats have been around for ages, but as technological advancements made it possible for thermostats to connect to Wi-Fi, it was only a matter of time before tech companies started producing smart thermostats.

Smart thermostats can be pre programmed so your home is always at the temperature you want.

Smart shades

Like with a smart thermostat, smart shades can help you lower your utility bills by regulating the amount of natural light that comes into your home even when you aren’t there.

They can be programmed to open and close automatically when you are out of town, which will give outsiders the impression that someone is home. This could be a possible deterrent to would-be burglars.

Smart home security systems

Thanks to smart home security systems, you can easily keep an eye on your property from wherever you are.

For example, if you are away on vacation and want to make sure that nobody broke into your home and stole anything, you can simply log in to your smartphone app and check the footage recorded by security cameras installed all over your property.

These kinds of systems are highly customizable, but they generally involve motion detectors. These detectors can be linked to your phone as well as to a professional monitoring service.

Smart smoke detectors

In addition to alarming you when smoke or noxious gases are detected in the home, a smoke detector can send you alerts when the battery level of the device is getting low.

This way, you won’t be under any false sense of security, thinking you have a smoke detector installed only to find out when it’s too late that the battery had died weeks ago.

Having a smart smoke detector can also save you money. Some insurance companies will offer lower rates to homeowners that have a smart smoke detector installed in their home.

They are relatively inexpensive, easy to install, use, and maintain. There really is no reason to continue using “unintelligent” smoke detectors anymore.

Smart speakers

A smart speaker isn’t just for playing music. In fact, when a smart speaker is paired with a virtual assistant such as Alexa, you can interact with it.

You can ask it questions – what is the weather forecast for the day? or Who won the big game last night? What time does the shop open? etc.

You can have your smart speaker play the music you want to hear simply by giving it a voice command.

Smart lights

The last product on our list is smart light bulbs, which can help you significantly save money on electricity bills.

If you use them in place of regular bulbs, you will not only be able to turn the lights off through voice commands, but also adjust the brightness depending on your needs.

For example, if you are getting ready for bed and don’t need a lot of light, you can simply tell your lights to dim or turn them off completely.

The takeaway

Adding simple gadgets and smart devices to your home can give your home increased convenience and functionality. You have control over the appliances and features of your home, even when you are away.

Additionally, if you are planning to sell your home, to a prospective buyer smart features give off a sense of modernity and style. They can give the impression that the whole house is state-of-the art and, thus, worth the high price you are asking for it.

There are plenty of great ways for you to improve the value of your home. All you have to do is decide which technology upgrade is best for you and install it in your home.

Whether it’s added security, a boost in the resale value, or increased functionality and comfort, going smart is a wise choice.
